Axel's take: 8.2/10

Classic Dublin luxury with standout hospitality, but renovations currently compromise the full experience. a historic 5-star luxury hotel overlooking St. Stephen’s Green, scored for what it is.

The Shelbourne is a historic 5-star overlooking St. Stephen’s Green, and a strong pick for travelers who prefer traditional grandeur to contemporary design. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, comfortable rooms and excellent breakfasts; cleanliness also scores strongly across sites. Its walkable setting near Grafton Street and Dublin’s museums makes it an appealing sightseeing base.

Right now, though, you are not getting the complete luxury package. The hotel warns of daytime noise from room renovations continuing until May 2027. The spa, swimming pool, sauna and steam room are closed, the gym operates on a limited basis, and The Terrace is closed until 2027. Some guests also find parts of the bedrooms tired. We’d choose it for history, hospitality and location, but skip it during the works if spa time or undisturbed daytime relaxation matters.

• Best for: travelers who enjoy historic grand hotels; sightseeing on foot; special occasions centered on dining

• Watch out for: room renovations and possible daytime noise through May 2027; spa, pool, sauna and steam room closed; some bedrooms still show their age

• Location: Across from St. Stephen’s Green, with Grafton Street and major cultural sights within walking distance.

• Rooms: Comfort is widely praised, but some interiors look tired; ask about renovation status and proximity to works.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia feedback.

• Service: Recent guests repeatedly single out warm, attentive staff and helpful doormen.

• Amenities: Restaurants and bars remain key draws; wellness facilities are closed apart from a limited, unstaffed exercise space.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking costs extra; check breakfast inclusion, and note that The Terrace remains closed until 2027.
