Axel's take: 9.1/10

A standout central base with excellent staff, compact rooms and surprisingly good soundproofing. a renovated mid-range boutique hotel beside Temple Bar, scored for what it is.

The Mercantile is a mid-range boutique hotel on Dame Street, rebuilt around a major renovation completed in June 2025. It’s a strong pick for exploring Dublin on foot: Trinity College, Dublin Castle and Temple Bar are close by. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise the cleanliness, helpful staff, comfortable beds and excellent breakfast. For a central city hotel, it delivers unusually well on the basics.

Room size is the main compromise: several guests describe tight quarters and limited luggage space, so choose carefully if you’re staying longer. The streets outside are lively, although recent reviews repeatedly credit the soundproofing rather than report disrupted sleep. Breakfast may cost extra, parking is off-site, and standard check-in starts at 4pm. We’d skip it if generous room space or a quiet neighborhood matters more than walkability.

• Best for: couples on a city break; first-time Dublin visitors; car-free sightseeing

• Watch out for: compact rooms and limited luggage space; busy nightlife surroundings; off-site paid parking

• Location: Highly walkable Dame Street address beside Temple Bar, close to Trinity College and Dublin Castle.

• Rooms: Freshly renovated, air-conditioned rooms; comfortable beds and effective soundproofing earn praise, but space can be tight.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong recent feedback across Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception and breakfast staff are recurring strengths in recent reviews.

• Amenities: Bar, restaurant, café, free Wi-Fi, lift access and 24-hour reception; breakfast is a particular highlight.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion depends on booking; paid parking nearby, cashless accommodation payments, and standard check-in from 4pm.
