Axel's take: 7.4/10

Useful transport links and a proper pool, but four-star polish is uneven. a practical 4-star hotel with a leisure centre north of central Dublin, scored for what it is.

The Bonnington is a practical 4-star hotel north of central Dublin, better suited to a convenient base than a special-occasion escape. Its indoor pool, gym and on-site dining give it useful substance, while nearby buses connect with the airport and city centre. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and breakfast; Booking.com’s overall ratings also point to a generally comfortable, clean stay.

The trade-off is inconsistent upkeep. The hotel says its bedrooms have been refurbished, yet 2026 reviews still describe dated bathrooms and corridors, maintenance niggles and occasional unpleasant smells. Tripadvisor guests are noticeably more critical of housekeeping and service, and several mention noise. We’d consider it for families who will use the pool or travelers happy taking buses, but skip it for reliably polished four-star surroundings or sightseeing entirely on foot.

  • Best for: families who will use the pool; travelers wanting airport and city bus connections; short stays outside the city centre

  • Watch out for: uneven room and bathroom upkeep; noise and occasional odor complaints; limited parking; vehicle registration required

  • Location: North of the centre on Swords Road, with useful bus connections rather than doorstep sightseeing.

  • Rooms: Comfortable beds draw praise, but refurbishment claims sit alongside recent reports of dated fittings and noise.

  • Cleanliness: Strong aggregate cleanliness ratings, tempered by recurring Tripadvisor complaints about carpets and room checks.

  • Service: Frequently friendly and helpful on Expedia; Tripadvisor reports more uneven handling of problems.

  • Amenities: Indoor pool, gym, sauna, steam room and dining; children have restricted pool hours and swim caps are mandatory.

  • Fees and surprises: Complimentary parking is limited and requires registration to avoid clamping; swim caps cost extra if needed.
