Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong Dublin base for comfortable rooms, warm service and sightseeing on foot. A stylish, upscale 4-star city hotel near Merrion Square, scored for what it is.

The Alex is a stylish 4-star city hotel that gets the important things right: comfortable beds, generous bedrooms and genuinely helpful service. We'd put it high on the list for a Dublin city break. Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness, staff and the walkable location near Merrion Square and Pearse Station. Classic rooms start at a useful 30 square metres, with air conditioning and rainfall showers.

The trade-offs are worth knowing rather than deal-breakers. Some guests find bathrooms or shower enclosures tight, and breakfast attracts less consistent enthusiasm than the rooms. The complimentary gym is at sister hotel The Mont, not inside The Alex. Guests also reported a construction site behind the hotel in 2026; current disruption remains unconfirmed, so check before booking if quiet or views are priorities. We'd skip it if an on-site gym and expansive bathrooms are essentials.

• Best for: Couples on a Dublin city break; Sightseers exploring on foot; Business travelers wanting comfortable rooms

• Watch out for: Gym is at nearby sister hotel; Some compact bathrooms and showers; Rear construction reported in 2026; verify current status

• Location: Walkable base near Merrion Square, the National Gallery and Pearse Station, outside Temple Bar's busiest streets.

• Rooms: Classic rooms measure 30 square metres; comfortable beds earn repeated praise, though some bathrooms feel tight.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com feedback.

• Service: Consistent praise for welcoming reception staff, helpful problem-solving and attentive housekeeping.

• Amenities: Restaurant, café, terrace and work hub; complimentary 24-hour gym access is at The Mont.

• Fees and surprises: Cashless hotel; breakfast inclusion depends on booking, late checkout costs extra, and room service carries a tray charge.
