Axel's take: 8.8/10

A dependable Dublin base with roomy accommodation, warm service and spa extras. a contemporary 4-star city-center hotel near Dublin Castle, scored for what it is.

This contemporary 4-star near Dublin Castle is a strong pick for sightseeing without sleeping in the thick of Temple Bar. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise spacious, clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff; breakfast is another consistent highlight. It delivers the comfort and convenience we'd want from an upscale city hotel, rather than relying on its address alone.

The main catch is that the spa isn't an included hotel perk: Radisson confirms Velvære costs extra and is strictly for over-18s, including its hydrotherapy pool. Underground parking also carries a charge. We'd choose it for a comfortable walking-based city break, but skip it if a children's swimming pool or included spa access is essential.

• Best for: couples exploring Dublin on foot; business travelers wanting central comfort; city-break travelers who prioritize spacious rooms

• Watch out for: spa access costs extra; spa and hydrotherapy pool are adults-only; paid underground parking

• Location: Walkable to Dublin Castle, St Patrick's Cathedral and Grafton Street, with guests appreciating the relatively quiet setting.

• Rooms: Spacious rooms and comfortable beds are recurring strengths in recent guest reviews.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength: Booking.com scores cleanliness 9.3, alongside repeated recent praise elsewhere.

• Service: Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise friendly, helpful reception and breakfast staff.

• Amenities: Restaurant, bar, breakfast buffet, 24-hour gym and a separately charged spa with a thermal suite.

• Fees and surprises: Budget separately for parking and spa entry; Velvære admits over-18s only.
