Axel's take: 8.1/10

A comfortable Smithfield base with helpful staff, but modest four-star polish. a practical 4-star chain hotel on Smithfield Square, scored for what it is.

Maldron Smithfield is a practical 4-star chain hotel, strongest as a base for exploring Dublin rather than a destination in itself. We'd pick it for comfortable beds, useful family-room options and the Luas stop a couple of minutes away. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, while breakfast generally earns good feedback. Smithfield's pubs, cafés and Jameson Distillery give you plenty nearby without staying in Temple Bar.

The compromises matter: recent guests report no air conditioning, and warm rooms can be uncomfortable. Noise insulation also draws complaints. Cleanliness scores remain strong overall, but several recent reviews describe missed housekeeping or tired bathroom details, so four-star consistency isn't guaranteed. Parking is paid through the independently operated Q-Park. We'd skip it if reliable cooling, near-silent rooms or a polished upscale stay are priorities.

• Best for: couples exploring Dublin; families needing flexible room layouts; travelers using the Luas

• Watch out for: no air conditioning reported by recent guests; noise between rooms; uneven housekeeping and bathroom upkeep

• Location: On Smithfield Square, around two minutes from the Luas and 15 minutes' walk from O'Connell Street.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and varied family layouts; some rooms have balconies, but cooling and soundproofing are weaknesses.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall guest scores, tempered by repeated recent reports of missed cleaning and bathroom shortcomings.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff are one of the most consistent positives across review sites.

• Amenities: Grain & Grill restaurant and bar, buffet breakfast, free Wi-Fi and meeting rooms.

• Fees and surprises: Q-Park parking costs extra and is independently operated; breakfast inclusion depends on your booking.
