Axel's take: 8.8/10

A comfortable canal-side base with standout staff, just outside Dublin’s busiest streets. a modern 4-star overlooking Dublin’s Grand Canal, scored for what it is.

Clayton Hotel Charlemont is a modern 4-star overlooking the Grand Canal, and a strong pick if you want comfortable rooms without staying amid the busiest tourist streets. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, comfortable beds and generous breakfast; Booking.com’s strong cleanliness and comfort scores support that picture. The bright atrium gives it somewhere pleasant to unwind, while nearby Charlemont Luas makes getting around straightforward.

The compromise is location: you can walk into the centre, but the main sights aren’t immediately outside. A few recent Tripadvisor guests describe housekeeping misses, although cleanliness feedback overall remains strongly positive. Breakfast can cost extra, and limited paid valet parking must be reserved ahead. We’d skip it if doorstep sightseeing or boutique character matters more than dependable comfort.

• Best for: couples wanting a calmer city base; business travelers; sightseers happy to walk or take the tram

• Watch out for: outside the main sightseeing core; limited paid parking requires advance booking; check whether breakfast is included

• Location: Grand Canal setting, two minutes from Charlemont Luas and about one kilometre south of St. Stephen’s Green.

• Rooms: Modern, air-conditioned rooms with desks and tea-making facilities; guests regularly praise bed comfort.

• Cleanliness: Strong ratings across booking sites, with a few recent Tripadvisor reports of housekeeping misses.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception and restaurant staff are a consistent strength in recent reviews.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi and fitness-suite access, plus a restaurant, bar and coffee shop.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast depends on the booking; valet parking costs extra, has limited spaces and requires advance reservation.
