Axel's take: 7.9/10

A comfortable Ballsbridge base with character, but check your room’s cooling before booking. a historic 4-star hotel in residential Ballsbridge, scored for what it is.

Clayton Ballsbridge is a historic 4-star whose handsome Victorian exterior houses a large, practical hotel rather than an intimate retreat. It’s a strong pick for RDS events, Aviva Stadium visits and travelers happy to stay outside central Dublin, with Sandymount DART nearby. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff; breakfast is another dependable strength. We’d choose it for convenience and comfort rather than luxury.

The main catch is room choice: air-conditioning is not standard, and recent summer reviews repeatedly describe overheated bedrooms. The hotel explicitly lists cooling in Executive Rooms and Executive Junior Suites, so confirm your category. Some guests also find rooms less polished than the public spaces suggest, while the gym is small. Parking costs extra. We’d skip it if walk-everywhere sightseeing or reliably cool sleeping conditions are priorities.

• Best for: RDS and Aviva Stadium visitors; families needing larger or connecting rooms; travelers comfortable using public transport

• Watch out for: air-conditioning is not standard across room categories; outside the city-center sightseeing core; paid parking and a small gym

• Location: Residential Ballsbridge, convenient for the RDS and Aviva Stadium, with nearby DART and bus connections.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and generous space earn praise, but finish and cooling vary by category.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor feedback.

• Service: Staff attract frequent praise for friendliness and helpfulness, although individual experiences vary.

• Amenities: Restaurant, bar, coffee dock, free Wi-Fi and a fitness suite that several guests describe as small.

• Fees and surprises: On-site parking is charged; confirm breakfast inclusion and air-conditioning for the exact room booked.
