Axel's take: 8.9/10

Warm service and generous rooms outweigh an increasingly dated look. a traditional five-star city hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road, scored for what it is.

Shangri-La Dubai is a traditional five-star city hotel that makes its strongest case through service rather than cutting-edge design. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff, careful housekeeping and comfortable beds. Entry-level rooms are a generous 45 square meters, and booking a Burj Khalifa view gives the stay a distinctive backdrop. It's a strong pick for travelers who prioritize comfort and personal attention over Dubai's newest interiors.

The main compromise is age: guests across Tripadvisor and Trip.com describe some rooms and facilities as dated, although overall ratings remain strong. This is a main-road city base, not a beachfront resort; expect transport rather than effortless walks to the major sights. Horizon Club draws particularly enthusiastic feedback, but the indoor pool is restricted to eligible room categories. We'd skip it for contemporary design or a beach-first holiday.

• Best for: business travelers wanting attentive service; couples booking skyline views; travelers considering Horizon Club

• Watch out for: dated décor in some rooms; indoor pool access depends on room category; city location rather than beachfront

• Location: Sheikh Zayed Road base near DIFC and Downtown; Financial Centre metro is roughly a ten-minute walk.

• Rooms: Deluxe rooms start at 45 square meters, with separate baths and showers; some guests find the interiors dated.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across guest ratings, with frequent praise for housekeeping.

• Service: Warm, attentive staff are the clearest recurring highlight, especially in Horizon Club.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, gym, spa and several dining venues; indoor pool access is restricted to eligible categories.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion varies by booking; tourism charges apply, while Expedia lists complimentary self-parking and valet.
