Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong Old Dubai base with creek balconies, welcoming staff and extensive dining. a historic five-star city hotel overlooking Dubai Creek, scored for what it is.

This historic five-star is a strong pick for Old Dubai rather than beachfront glamour. Creek-view balconies give it a clear advantage, and Union Metro is within walking distance. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms, helpful staff and breakfast. The hotel says its rooms have been renovated; its appeal is established comfort rather than cutting-edge luxury. Extensive dining, an outdoor pool and a spa round out a well-equipped city stay.

The main caveat is room position: some Tripadvisor guests report noise, including early calls to prayer and elevator disturbance. Light sleepers should request a quiet room away from lifts. Allow for the tourism levy and a damage deposit, and check whether breakfast is included. We'd skip it for a beach-centered holiday or if contemporary design matters more than creek views and access to the souks.

• Best for: Old Dubai sightseeing; Travelers who value creek views; Business travelers using the metro

• Watch out for: Noise varies by room position; Not a beachfront hotel; Tourism levy and damage deposit

• Location: Creekside in Deira, within walking distance of Union Metro and convenient for the souks.

• Rooms: Creek-view balconies are a highlight; the hotel advertises renovated rooms, though the style remains traditional.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent Expedia and Trip.com feedback.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff attract repeated praise across guest-review sites.

• Amenities: Extensive restaurants and bars, outdoor pool, fitness facilities and spa.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a tourism levy and damage deposit; breakfast and airport transfers can cost extra.
