Axel's take on Wieden & the Naschmarkt: #2 of 10 in Vienna, 8.3/10
The best compromise between classic sightseeing and a neighborhood worth coming home to. Excellent hotels, easy sightseeing and convincing neighborhood character earn second place, without the old town’s depth of doorstep attractions.
Wieden lets you do the grand Vienna trip without living entirely inside it. Around Schleifmuhlgasse and the Freihausviertel, galleries, coffee shops and relaxed bars sit close to Naschmarkt and Karlsplatz. Stay here for mornings in cafes, easy cultural outings and evenings that don't require a separate journey across town.
Use Naschmarkt as an orientation point, not your whole restaurant plan: the side streets are a major part of the appeal. Market stalls close on Sundays, although some restaurants open. If you are sensitive to late conversation and bar noise, choose a residential side street rather than a room directly above the action.
- Best for: first-time visitors, food lovers, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You need silence beside your front door; You want a leafy suburban setting
- Getting around: U1 at Taubstummengasse, U1/U2/U4 at Karlsplatz, U4 at Kettenbrückengasse and trams on Wiedner Hauptstrasse; walk to Naschmarkt and Karlskirche; VIE airport bus 4 serves Karlsplatz.
- After dark: Schleifmuhlgasse and the Schikaneder area stay sociable; the nearby Naschmarkt–Mariahilf streets also connect easily with Vienna's LGBTQ bar scene.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $197 a night · usually 6% under the public rate
