Axel's take on Schonbrunn & Hietzing: #9 of 10 in Vienna, 5.9/10
Excellent for palace gardens and the zoo, less practical for citywide sightseeing. Good value and capable hotels suit a deliberate gardens stay, but weaker central access and fewer nearby dining options keep it ninth.
Stay here when Schönbrunn is more than a half-day excursion. The palace grounds, zoo and children's attractions make repeated, unhurried visits easy, while Hietzing's streets provide cafes and a more residential rhythm. Families who want greenery between outings have a genuine reason to sleep here rather than simply visit.
The trade-off is making central sightseeing a journey rather than a walk. Also distinguish Hietzing's village-like streets from main-road addresses around Schlossallee and Schönbrunner Schlossstrasse: proximity to the palace does not guarantee a leafy setting. Choose this area deliberately for its parks and calmer residential pockets, not as the default for a short first visit.
- Best for: families, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You have a short, sight-packed first visit; You want late bars within walking distance
- Getting around: U4 at Schönbrunn/Hietzing and trams 10/60 at Hietzing; palace grounds and zoo are walkable; from VIE, take Railjet to Hauptbahnhof, then U1 to Karlsplatz and U4 west.
- After dark: Local accounts describe the residential streets near Hietzing as calm; main-road traffic remains the more relevant address-level caveat.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $151 a night · usually 10% under the public rate

How to choose
- Choose Austria Trend Hotel Maximilian if modern, spacious rooms and a quiet courtyard outlook matter more than having breakfast in the same building.
- Choose Austria Trend Parkhotel Schönbrunn if you prefer traditional surroundings, generous rooms and dining beside the palace park.
- Choose Hotel Lucia if a cheaper U3-connected base suits you better than staying directly beside Schönbrunn.
What paying more buys
Hotel Viktoria Schönbrunn offers a cheaper palace-area base but dated bathrooms and no air-conditioning. Hotel Maximilian buys more modern, spacious comfort and wellness facilities; Parkhotel Schönbrunn adds a historic setting and broader dining next door. If you're mainly exploring central Vienna by subway, cheaper Hotel Lucia is sufficient without paying for the palace-park address. Typical rates with Axel here run from $120 a night at Hotel Lucia to $196 at Austria Trend Parkhotel Schönbrunn (last 30 days).
