Axel's take on Sololaki: #2 of 7 in Tbilisi, 8.4/10
The best all-round balance of old Tbilisi and everyday neighborhood life. Sololaki combines exceptional access, restaurants, strong hotels and distinctive architecture, but weak value keeps it behind Old Town.
Sololaki’s merchant mansions and decorated entrance halls give it a different character from the medieval lanes nearby. Walk Machabeli, Galaktion Tabidze and Lado Asatiani streets for architecture, small restaurants and wine bars, with Freedom Square at the neighborhood’s lower edge. It suits travelers who want sightseeing and an enjoyable evening in the same address.
The compromise is physical rather than geographical: pavements can be uneven, streets climb toward the ridge, and some routes become staircases. Choose the lower streets for easier outings. Skip it if accessibility is essential, or if you expect historic surroundings to mean complete silence after dinner.
- Best for: first-time visitors, couples, food lovers, museums and culture
- Skip it if: You need consistently level pavements; You want guaranteed nighttime quiet
- Getting around: Liberty Square metro, Line 1, is easiest from the lower streets; Old Town is walkable; from TBS take bus 337 to Avlabari, then Line 1 to Liberty Square, or a taxi.
- After dark: Wine bars and restaurants keep the lower streets sociable; the quieter uphill addresses require more climbing.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $128 a night · usually 19% under the public rate

Where to look in Sololaki
- Tabidze Street near Freedom Square. Start on the lower streets for cafés, architectural walks and easier access to transport without climbing deep into Sololaki. Hotels here: Ibis Styles Tbilisi Center Hotel, IOTA Hotel Tbilisi Hotel, Courtyard by Marriott Tbilisi Hotel.
- Gizo Nishnianidze Street. Choose this residential edge for townhouse surroundings rather than the busiest café stretch; expect a longer walk back from the square. Hotels here: Hotel Communal Hotel Sololaki.
- Daniel Chonqadze Street. The uphill edge suits architecture lovers comfortable with climbs; less convenient when every outing needs an easy return. Hotels here: Hotel Pine Astoria.
How to choose
- Choose Hotel Communal Hotel Sololaki if personal hospitality and a communal breakfast matter more than room size or an elevator.
- Choose Ibis Styles Tbilisi Center Hotel if you want Freedom Square convenience and friendly reception without paying for full-service luxury.
- Choose Hotel Pine Astoria if you want spacious rooms at one of the cheaper rates here and can manage a steep uphill return.
What paying more buys
Cheaper Pine Astoria already offers spacious rooms and an indoor pool, but requires a steep climb and patience with service. Courtyard buys a Freedom Square address and generally good-sized rooms; much pricier Qarvasla emphasizes historic character, breakfast and attentive service. Neither premium is essential if you enjoy hills and mostly need space to sleep. Typical rates with Axel here run from $91 a night at Hotel Pine Astoria to $343 at Hotel Qarvasla (last 30 days).
