Axel's take on Old Town: #1 of 7 in Tbilisi, 8.7/10
Stay here for doorstep sightseeing, not uninterrupted sleep. Old Town wins overall for doorstep sights, abundant restaurants and strong value, though its hotels score below the leaders and late bars complicate sleep.
Old Town puts Tbilisi’s balconied lanes, Sioni Cathedral and Abanotubani’s sulfur baths into your everyday walk. Around Meidan and Kote Afkhazi Street, sightseeing requires little planning: step outside and start exploring. Choose this for a short first visit when atmosphere matters more than a residential feel.
Check the actual street before booking. Shardeni’s nightlife, steep steps toward Betlemi and awkward vehicle access make different addresses feel very different. Skip it if you need level walking or quiet evenings. Narikala Fortress itself remains closed for restoration in the latest checked reports; the Mother of Georgia viewpoint is still accessible.
- Best for: first-time visitors, couples, travelers without a car
- Skip it if: You need step-free walking; You are sensitive to nightlife noise
- Getting around: Liberty Square metro, Line 1, serves the northern lanes; most historic sights are walkable; from TBS take bus 337 to Avlabari and walk across Metekhi Bridge, or use a taxi.
- After dark: The restaurant and bar streets stay lively late; choose away from Shardeni if sleep matters.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $62 a night · usually 19% under the public rate

Where to look in Old Town
- Gorgasali Street by Abanotubani. Start here for bath visits and doorstep sightseeing; restaurants and the river keep outings simple. Hotels here: Mercure Tbilisi Old Town, Tiflis Palace, Sole Palace Hotel.
- Shavteli Street. Choose the Clock Tower lanes for architectural wandering and café stops, rather than Shardeni’s bar circuit. Hotels here: Ambassadori Hotel Tbilisi.
- Vertskhli Street. A useful starting point between Freedom Square and the old lanes for independent walkers who like cafés nearby. Hotels here: Silver 39 Corner Hotel.
How to choose
- Choose Silver 39 Corner Hotel if you want clean rooms and helpful staff for exploring on foot; request a room away from nearby bars.
- Choose Mercure Tbilisi Old Town if you prefer chain-hotel comforts beside the baths, with helpful reception and a rooftop bar.
- Choose KMM Hotel if you want one of the cheapest bases here and metro access; accept variable comfort and check construction.
What paying more buys
Compared with cheaper KMM Hotel, Mercure Tbilisi Old Town buys more consistent room comfort and strong reception service beside the baths. Pricier Ambassadori adds an indoor pool, saunas and ornate interiors, but not dependable five-star service. The extra is hard to justify if you will be out all day and mainly need a convenient bed. Typical rates with Axel here run from $46 a night at KMM Hotel to $141 at Ambassadori Hotel Tbilisi (last 30 days).
