Axel's take on Matosinhos: #8 of 8 in Porto, 5.4/10
Make the beach your priority, or stay closer to Porto. Matosinhos offers seafood, beach life and reasonable value, but weaker hotels and distant central sights make it a specialist rather than general-purpose base.
Matosinhos makes sense when the Atlantic is part of the plan, not an optional excursion. You have a substantial beach, surf schools, seafront walks and the fish-restaurants around Rua Heróis de França. The municipal market and working-port setting give it an identity beyond being Porto’s beach suburb. Surfers and seafood-focused travelers have good reasons to sleep here.
For a short first visit, however, we would usually stay downtown and come out for a day. The metro is useful, but every cathedral, riverside or late-night Porto outing becomes a planned journey. Choose Matosinhos for several beach-led days, not because a rail connection makes it equivalent to staying centrally.
- Best for: food lovers, sports fans, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You have only a short sightseeing visit; You want spontaneous late nights in central Porto
- Getting around: A serves Matosinhos Sul and Brito Capelo; bus 500 follows the coast and river toward central Porto. From OPO, take E and change to A at Senhora da Hora.
- After dark: Seafood dinners and seafront bars give it an evening life of its own; choose away from those strips if quiet is the priority.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $111 a night

Where to look in Matosinhos
- Matosinhos Sul station. Start here for beach-led days with a metro connection to Porto; the sand and surf remain the main reason to stay. Hotels here: Four Points by Sheraton Matosinhos.
- Avenida Dom Afonso Henriques. A town-center alternative to the seafront, suited to errands and transit rather than having sand directly outside. Hotels here: Sea Porto Hotel.
- Avenida Doutor António Macedo. Choose the Exponor side for exhibition-led trips, not as a substitute for a beach or central Porto address. Hotels here: Holiday Inn Express Porto - Exponor by IHG.
How to choose
- Choose Four Points by Sheraton Matosinhos if you want the shortest beach walk here, modern comfort and particularly attentive front-desk help.
- Choose Sea Porto Hotel if you value Camino luggage help and a chance of free garage parking more than immediate beach access.
- Choose Holiday Inn Express Porto - Exponor by IHG if you are visiting Exponor by car and want the lowest rate here with breakfast included.
What paying more buys
Holiday Inn Express Exponor is cheaper and includes breakfast, but its address favors driving and exhibitions. Sea Porto brings a central Matosinhos base and limited free garage parking; Four Points costs more for a shorter beach walk, modern comfort and standout service. Exponor visitors gain little from paying for beach proximity, and none of these offers a pool. Typical rates with Axel here run from $94 a night at Holiday Inn Express Porto - Exponor by IHG to $133 at Four Points by Sheraton Matosinhos (last 30 days).
