Axel's take on Downtown: #2 of 5 in Palm Springs, 7.1/10
The easiest first-time base, especially for walking home after dinner. Downtown has the most to eat, drink and see nearby and distinctive character, but its hotels trail Tennis Club's and value is modest.
Stay here for the easiest first visit: Palm Canyon Drive puts café patios, shops and Thursday's VillageFest into one walkable strip. The Art Museum and Agua Caliente Cultural Museum add substance beyond pool time, while Arenas Road supplies gay bars and dancing. This is the simplest base for changing plans without getting back into a car.
That convenience comes with more street activity and less seclusion than Tennis Club. Favor a side street if evening noise bothers you. And distinguish a walkable downtown break from a completely car-free desert vacation: the tramway and Indian Canyons still require transport.
- Best for: first-time visitors, nightlife, business trips and conventions, travelers without a car
- Skip it if: You want secluded residential surroundings; You are sensitive to evening street activity
- Getting around: Walk between downtown sights; SunLine 1WV, 2 and 4 use Palm Canyon/Indian Canyon; from PSP, take a taxi/rideshare or hourly Route 4 from outside the terminal, then walk. Thursday VillageFest changes bus routing.
- After dark: Restaurant patios and Arenas Road keep the evening going; Thursday VillageFest adds pedestrian crowds along Palm Canyon Drive.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $291 a night · usually 9% under the public rate
