Axel's take on Oslo Central Station & Bjørvika: #2 of 12 in Oslo, 8.4/10
Choose the waterfront side for culture, or the station side for pure convenience. Excellent transport, waterfront culture and the strongest hotel showing secure second place, though value is modest and station surroundings vary.
This address offers two quite different experiences. Around Jernbanetorget, the priority is transport and getting straight into town. South of the tracks, Bjørvika opens into waterfront promenades, the Opera House, Deichman library and MUNCH. Barcode and Oslobukta add contemporary architecture, restaurants and shops rather than old-city charm.
For a short stay or an early train, the convenience is hard to beat. For a more relaxed setting, favour the waterfront over the busiest station approaches. Recent local discussions distinguish the visible social problems around parts of Oslo S from the experience of staying in Bjørvika; neither should be treated as one uniform neighbourhood.
- Best for: first-time visitors, travelers without a car, business trips and conventions, museums and culture
- Skip it if: You want older residential streets; You dislike busy station surroundings
- Getting around: Oslo S has direct OSL trains, with metro lines 1–5 at Jernbanetorget and trams toward Bjørvika; waterfront sights are walkable. TRF needs a shuttle plus train, or a coach to the adjacent bus terminal.
- After dark: Restaurants and waterfront venues support evenings in Bjørvika; station-side streets feel busier and less polished, with visible drug use reported on some approaches.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $167 a night
