Axel's take on Marigny & Bywater: #4 of 6 in New Orleans, 7.1/10
Stay near Frenchmen for music; choose Bywater for neighborhood-led days. Joint-highest hotel quality and better value than the leading three help, but fewer doorstep options and less convenient sightseeing limit its overall rank.
Marigny puts Frenchmen Street’s music clubs, colorful Creole cottages and neighborhood cafes beside the French Quarter without copying Bourbon’s party-strip atmosphere. Farther downriver, Bywater adds artist spaces, inventive restaurants and Crescent Park. Choose near Frenchmen if late sets and walking back from the Quarter are central to your trip.
Don’t treat the two neighborhoods as interchangeable. Bywater is farther from the main sights, and streetcars do not run through it; buses or rides become more important. Frenchmen-facing rooms can be noisy, while residential blocks offer a different pace. This is especially rewarding for music-led repeat visits and couples who want neighborhood life rather than convention convenience.
- Best for: nightlife, food lovers, couples, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You need straightforward convention access; You expect all of Bywater to be a short Quarter walk
- Getting around: Walk between Marigny and the Quarter; use 8 St. Claude or rides for farther Bywater trips; from MSY, taxi/rideshare or 202 downtown followed by 8.
- After dark: Frenchmen is a late-night music destination; residential blocks have a different rhythm, so choose between doorstep nightlife and a quieter sleeping street.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $255 a night · usually 5% under the public rate
