Axel's take on Besiktas & Bosphorus: #6 of 7 in Istanbul, 6.4/10
Stay for Bosphorus time and football, accepting less convenient sightseeing connections. Beşiktaş & Bosphorus has the strongest hotels, but poor value and less convenient sightseeing connections outweigh its waterfront appeal.
Beşiktaş has two faces: the breakfast cafés, fish market and football loyalties of Çarşı, and the grander Bosphorus frontage around Dolmabahçe. Akaretler adds restored rowhouses and café terraces, while Yıldız Park offers a green escape uphill. Stay here for waterside downtime, palace visits and a neighborhood not organized mainly around tour groups.
The compromise is movement. The tram ends at Kabataş rather than running through Çarşı, and the metro is uphill rather than beside the ferries. Prefer ferry connections over assuming every European-side journey will be quick. This is a good second-visit base, especially for luxury or football; skip it if most mornings must start in Sultanahmet.
- Best for: luxury travelers, sports fans, couples
- Skip it if: Most days revolve around Sultanahmet; You need a metro station beside your waterfront address
- Getting around: Walk Çarşı, Akaretler and Dolmabahçe; ferries and 30A/30M buses are useful. T1 at Kabataş requires a walk or bus ride. IST: M11 to Gayrettepe, M2 to Şişli-Mecidiyeköy, then bus. SAW: M4 to Kadıköy, then ferry.
- After dark: Çarşı is lively in the evening and especially loud around football matches; do not confuse a waterfront address with a quiet one.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $229 a night · usually 10% under the public rate
