Axel's take on Greenway Plaza & Upper Kirby: #4 of 6 in Houston, 5.8/10
Good dinners and useful offices, with more driving than neighborhood strolling. The strongest value and appealing restaurant streets help, but weaker reviewed hotels, disconnected blocks and no nearby rail hold it back.
Kirby Drive and Richmond Avenue have the restaurants and shops; Levy Park gives families somewhere to pause. West toward Edloe, Greenway Plaza is more office-campus Houston: useful for work, less rewarding for an aimless walk. This is an appealing base for people who plan evenings around dinner rather than clubs.
The compromise is movement. Wide roads, office blocks and the Southwest Freeway interrupt the neighborhood feel, and there's no nearby rail station. Local buses are useful, but most visitors will supplement them with driving or rideshares. Pick Upper Kirby's restaurant streets over Greenway's office frontage for a leisure stay; skip both if you want major sights and nightlife outside the door.
- Best for: couples, food lovers, business trips and conventions, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You want rail within a short walk; You prefer sightseeing without planned journeys
- Getting around: 25 Richmond and 41 Kirby/Polk serve the district; walk locally around Kirby and Levy Park, with no nearby rail; from IAH/HOU, taxi/rideshare is simplest, or 500 Downtown Direct plus connecting transit.
- After dark: Think dinner and post-work drinks rather than a continuous club strip; Upper Kirby offers more evening destinations than Greenway's office frontage.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $91 a night · usually 14% under the public rate
