Axel's take on Convention Center & West End: #3 of 6 in Dallas, 6.4/10
Useful for conventions and JFK history, with major construction caveats. Strong access, solid hotels and better value than Downtown earn third place; thinner nearby appeal and construction weaken the overall experience.
West End is the historic warehouse side of Downtown: brick buildings, Western-wear shops and restaurants around Market and Record streets. Dealey Plaza, the Sixth Floor Museum and the Holocaust and Human Rights Museum make it a practical history base. The convention-center streets farther south feel more purpose-built for event arrivals than neighborhood wandering.
The big qualification is reconstruction. Convention Center station closed on January 5, 2026, and demolition and rebuilding are proceeding in phases. Check your event's actual entrance rather than assuming the obvious walking route still works. For a leisure stay, Downtown's Arts District or Uptown offers a stronger all-round experience.
- Best for: business trips and conventions, travelers on a budget, museums and culture
- Skip it if: Construction disruption would spoil your stay; You want a lively neighborhood evening without planning
- Getting around: JFK sights are walkable; West End offers all four DART lines and direct Orange service to DFW; use Union or West End instead of closed Convention Center station; DAL needs rail plus Route 5 or a taxi.
- After dark: Market Street has dinner options, but don't expect the sustained evening activity of Uptown, especially away from restaurants and events.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $191 a night
