Axel's take on Newlands & Constantia: #8 of 8 in Cape Town, 5.0/10
Stay for leafy calm, cricket and wine; expect to travel by road. Respectable hotel reviews cannot offset very weak value, dispersed amenities and less convenient access to the usual first-visit sights.
These southern suburbs suit a different trip: Newlands has a village restaurant scene, forest walks and cricket; Constantia offers leafy lanes, wine estates and long lunches. Kirstenbosch is a major reason to stay on this side of Table Mountain. Newlands Village gives you more everyday life on foot than a secluded Constantia address.
Don't mistake the two for one walkable neighbourhood. You'll need a car, driver or repeated ride-hailing to link wine farms, gardens and central-city sights. We would choose it for quiet, cricket or a slower second visit; skip it for a short first stay built around the Waterfront, Atlantic beaches and late nights.
- Best for: a quiet stay, sports fans, couples
- Skip it if: You want most outings to start on foot; Your trip centres on the Waterfront and nightlife
- Getting around: Newlands station offers Southern Line trains for village-side stays; walk locally rather than between suburbs, and use road transport for Constantia; CPT by taxi or transfer.
- After dark: Newlands has village pubs; Constantia suits quieter dinner-led evenings. We would arrange a driver or ride rather than walk between dispersed venues after dark.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $522 a night
