Axel's take: 8.4/10
A welcoming neighborhood base with real character, but choose carefully if you sleep lightly. A small, characterful boutique hotel in De Waterkant, scored for what it is.
The Grey is a 13-room boutique hotel in De Waterkant, better approached as an intimate city base than a full-service luxury stay. It's a strong pick for travelers who want restaurants and cafés nearby, individual décor and genuinely welcoming service. Recent Booking.com, Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the staff, cleanliness and location. The rooftop's Table Mountain views and small pool add appeal; rooms with private terraces are worth considering.
The main compromises are space and soundproofing. Several guests describe snug rooms, limited luggage storage and noise carrying from corridors, nearby venues or the rooftop bar. There is no elevator, and Booking.com lists the Skybar as closed June through September. We'd skip it if you need step-free access, generous room space or reliably quiet early nights; otherwise, it's a very good neighborhood stay.
