Axel's take on Piața Romană & Piața Victoriei: #4 of 7 in Bucharest, 7.8/10
A lived-in central base for cafés, museums and quieter nights. Excellent transport and appealing everyday streets offset fewer doorstep sights and a smaller hotel selection; busy junctions demand careful address choices.
Stay around Piața Amzei and the side streets off Lascăr Catargiu for cafés, restaurants and a more everyday rhythm than Old Town. Toward Piața Victoriei, the Antipa and Romanian Peasant museums provide useful daytime destinations, with Kiseleff's greener streets beyond. Recent local accommodation advice repeatedly points visitors toward Romană, Amzei and Calea Victoriei.
The two squares themselves are busy traffic junctions, so choose the street rather than the square's name. Romană works better for walking south to evening venues; Victoriei favors museums, offices and metro connections. Families and longer-stay visitors should appreciate the balance, but travelers wanting historic lanes and bars immediately downstairs may find it too spread out.
- Best for: families, food lovers, a quiet stay, shopping
- Skip it if: You want Old Town immediately outside; You are considering a room facing a major junction
- Getting around: M2 serves Romană, while M1/M2 meet at Victoriei; walk along Calea Victoriei toward the historic core; bus 100 serves both squares from OTP and the BBU airport stop.
- After dark: Amzei and nearby dining streets remain sociable, with less club concentration than Lipscani; boulevard traffic is the more persistent nuisance.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $105 a night
