Axel's take on Herăstrău & Romexpo: #7 of 7 in Bucharest, 5.8/10
Best for park time or Romexpo, not a short sightseeing break. Good hotels, parkland and exhibition access suit specific trips, but dispersed streets, limited nearby choice and uneven metro access put it last overall.
Herăstrău, officially King Michael I Park, gives northern Bucharest a very different pace: lakeside walks, running routes and the open-air Village Museum replace the historic center's dense streets. Around Bulevardul Mărăști and Piața Presei, Romexpo makes this a logical choice for exhibitions and events. Stay here when those destinations genuinely shape your trip.
Do not assume park access means easy city access. Romexpo and the northern lakeside streets are not beside Aviatorilor metro, and broad roads make some short-looking journeys less pleasant on foot. Families and runners can enjoy the breathing room, but first-timers with only a few days should usually sleep centrally and visit the park instead.
- Best for: business trips and conventions, families, a quiet stay, sports fans
- Skip it if: You have only a short sightseeing break; You need a metro station a few steps away
- Getting around: Bus 100 at Piața Presei connects OTP and the BBU airport stop; tram 41 serves the Romexpo side; M2 Aviatorilor is useful at the park's southern end, not beside Romexpo.
- After dark: Generally subdued away from lakeside dining and scheduled events; a Romexpo concert can make the exhibition streets feel quite different.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $104 a night
