Axel's take on Gara de Nord: #6 of 7 in Bucharest, 6.3/10
Choose it for trains, not for your main Bucharest stay. Direct airport rail and the strongest value help Gara de Nord, but limited doorstep attractions and station-led surroundings weaken a sightseeing stay.
Gara de Nord earns its place through transport: intercity trains, the direct Henri Coandă airport service and metro connections are the reason to stay. Around Calea Griviței and Dinicu Golescu, the atmosphere is more station approaches than sightseeing promenade. Local restaurant recommendations nevertheless show that worthwhile neighborhood meals exist beyond the station concessions.
It makes sense for an early departure, a short stopover or several rail excursions without a car. Otherwise, we would move toward Victoriei or the central cultural streets. Recent local discussion emphasizes traffic and better alternatives rather than supporting blanket danger claims. It is a functional base, not the place to choose for attractive evening wandering.
- Best for: travelers on a budget, travelers without a car
- Skip it if: This is your main sightseeing stay; You want atmospheric evening walks
- Getting around: Gara de Nord has M1/M4 and intercity trains; OTP is a direct 20–25-minute train ride; from BBU, take bus 100 to Victoriei and M1 onward, or a taxi.
- After dark: Reports are mixed, but traffic-led station surroundings and limited evening appeal are recurring themes; choose it for a specific departure, not nightlife.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $82 a night
Where to stay in Bucharest: every neighborhood ranked
Where to look in Gara de Nord
- Calea Griviței, station approach. Stay on the station approach for rail departures and metro access; choose it for transport rather than an atmospheric evening stroll. Hotels here: MyContinental Bucuresti Gara de Nord, Hello Hotels Bucharest.
- Grozăvești metro. Look farther west for shopping and student-area meals with metro access; this is a separate base, not the station doorstep. Hotels here: Orhideea Residence & Spa.
How to choose
- Choose Orhideea Residence & Spa if you need family apartment space and will use the spa, with its inclusion confirmed.
- Choose MyContinental Bucuresti Gara de Nord if you want a straightforward station stopover with reasonably spacious rooms and helpful staff.
- Choose Hello Hotels Bucharest if you want the cheaper rail stopover and can accept compact rooms with limited bathroom privacy.
What paying more buys
Hello Hotels covers the budget rail stopover; MyContinental offers reasonably spacious rooms without leaving the station area. Orhideea Residence & Spa costs substantially more for apartments, pools and extensive sauna facilities, with spa access dependent on package. That upgrade makes little sense if you only need sleep before an early train. Typical rates with Axel here run from $63 a night at Hello Hotels Bucharest to $148 at Orhideea Residence & Spa (last 30 days).
