Stay here for Almaty's easiest old-centre wandering: the pedestrian stretch of Zhibek Zholy, little shops and the promenade down Panfilov. Panfilov Park and Ascension Cathedral are an easy walk east, with the Green Bazaar beyond. Recent Reddit advice specifically recommends Arbat, Gogol Street and the streets around KBTU for a convenient, relatively affordable stay.
