Axel's take on Uptown: #5 of 6 in Albuquerque, 5.0/10
The straightforward choice for shopping, family routines and east-side business. Uptown offers shopping and straightforward restaurant evenings, but weaker sightseeing access, middling hotels and poor value hold it back.
Uptown is Albuquerque’s shopping-and-office district around Louisiana Boulevard and Indian School Road. ABQ Uptown, Coronado Center and Winrock put shopping, dining and entertainment into an easily understood routine. It suits families who want straightforward evenings and business travelers whose meetings are on the east side; recent visitor discussions also favor it for practical overnight stops.
The compromise is atmosphere: this feels like a modern commercial district, with wide roads separating its pedestrian pockets. ART 766 offers a real alternative to driving Downtown, but Uptown is not my choice for spending most days around Old Town’s museums. Pick it for convenience and shopping, not adobe streets or late-night music.
- Best for: families, shopping, business trips and conventions
- Skip it if: Historic Albuquerque is the focus; You want late-night music within an easy stroll
- Getting around: Walk within the shopping complexes; ART 766 and bus 8 serve Uptown Transit Center; from ABQ, use a car/rideshare or bus 50 Downtown followed by 766.
- After dark: Restaurant-focused evenings rather than Downtown’s concentration of late music venues; choose this for an easier routine, not street nightlife.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $204 a night

- Louisiana Boulevard at Coronado Center. Choose this shopping-focused stretch for practical errands and restaurant evenings; wide roads separate the district’s pedestrian pockets. Hotels here: Sheraton Albuquerque Uptown.

How to choose
- Choose Hyatt Place Albuquerque/Uptown if you want cheaper spacious rooms, sofa beds and included breakfast beside Uptown shopping.
- Choose Hilton Garden Inn Albuquerque Uptown if you want an indoor pool and on-site dining, and can request a room away from the freeway.
- Choose Homewood Suites by Hilton Albuquerque Uptown if you need a kitchen-equipped suite for a longer stay and can overlook tired furnishings.
What paying more buys
Hilton Garden Inn costs more than Hyatt Place for an indoor pool, hot tub and on-site restaurant, but breakfast and parking usually cost extra. Homewood Suites adds kitchen-equipped suites and complimentary parking, with worn interiors. Neither upgrade is necessary for a short shopping break when Hyatt Place already supplies spacious rooms, sofa beds and breakfast. Typical rates with Axel here run from $176 a night at Hyatt Place Albuquerque/Uptown to $212 at Homewood Suites by Hilton Albuquerque Uptown (last 30 days).
