Axel's take on Testaccio & Aventine: #8 of 9 in Rome, 7.5/10
Choose Testaccio for food and evenings, the Aventine for a quieter retreat. Excellent value and distinctive food streets or hilltop calm compensate for a smaller hotel selection, fewer nearby options and less convenient sightseeing.
These are two different places to sleep: Testaccio’s market and trattoria streets below, and the Aventine’s churches and gardens uphill. Around Piazza Testaccio, food shopping and neighborhood cafés shape the day. Via di Monte Testaccio also has LGBTQ+ nightlife. The distinction matters more than a general promise of a local atmosphere.
Do not book blindly: club streets and traffic-heavy Via Marmorata are the opposite of a silent hilltop retreat. Metro access becomes less convenient uphill, and much headline sightseeing needs transport or a determined walk. Pick this for a slower return visit, good eating or deliberate quiet—not a two-night sightseeing checklist.
- Best for: food lovers, a quiet stay, nightlife, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You want every major sight on foot; You need both hilltop quiet and doorstep transport
- Getting around: Metro B at Piramide or Circo Massimo and tram 3 along Via Marmorata; walk locally. From FCO, FL1 runs directly to Ostiense, followed by a walk; from CIA, Airlink bus-and-train to Termini then B.
- After dark: Lower Testaccio has restaurants and club streets; visitors find the Aventine calmer, while Via Marmorata brings traffic and tram noise.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $153 a night
