IHG hotels rated: 6.0/10 for how they treat paying guests

Rank 8 of 21 · Read the fine print · Updated October 27, 2026

6.0/10

IHG works best with flexible rates and carefully chosen hotels

Our take: We'd book IHG selectively, with Kimpton a stronger bet than Candlewood Suites among hotels Axel has reviewed[Axel data]. It suits travelers willing to compare individual properties and pay for flexibility, which IHG says typically allows cancellation 24 to 48 hours before arrival[1][2]. The main catches are property fees that can survive even on Reward Nights and loyalty benefits lost on ordinary third-party bookings[3].

Best for

  • Kimpton stays with pets
  • Flexible-rate bookings
  • Hotel-by-hotel comparison

Watch out for

  • Mandatory fees on award stays
  • Prepaid-rate lock-in
  • Availability-dependent elite perks

Scorecard

Total-price honesty (20%)
5.4

Mandatory fees appear on a substantial share of quoted rates, with incomplete assurance of upfront inclusion outside the US.

Cancellation flexibility (15%)
5.6

Flexible rates vary by hotel, and one-third of refundable quotes require cancellation at least 72 hours before arrival.

Repriceability (15%)
5.3

Flexible bookings preserve a route to lower prices, but prepaid restrictions and a tightly limited Best Price Guarantee reduce protection.

Channel and member-rate fairness (10%)
7.5

Free membership brings a modest discount, but ordinary third-party bookings lose room-rate points, elite-night credit and benefits, with authorized-agent exceptions.

Loyalty value and fairness (10%)
4.5

Dynamic awards, 12-month inactivity expiry and recent benefit cuts weaken value despite Diamond breakfast and confirmable suite upgrades.

Gotcha fees and terms (10%)
6.5

Hotel-specific holds and departure penalties require checking, although members get standard internet and Kimpton has no pet fees.

Consistency of the stay (20%)
7.0

Reviewed hotels generally deliver, but Candlewood's weaker tail and mixed satisfaction studies make the individual property important.

Compare the full bill

IHG charges no reservation-making fee through its own booking channels, but its loyalty terms still allow resort fees and service charges on Reward Nights[4][3]. In the US, the FTC rule effective May 12, 2025 requires advertised lodging prices to include calculable mandatory fees upfront, while allowing government charges to appear separately[5].

Rates Axel's suppliers quoted from September 26 to October 25, 2026 covered 114,906 rates at 510 IHG hotels, excluding the Philippines and Indonesia[Axel data]. Mandatory property fees appeared on 31% of the same rates, with a typical charge of $33 a night where present. Twenty percent of those hotels had a fee on most rates, including 24% of the 400 US hotels. Treat the quoted fee share as a minimum, since supplier quotes can omit charges.

Parking examples show why the room total is not always the driving budget: Holiday Inn Express Waikīkī charges $49 plus tax daily for parking, on top of its $33 plus tax nightly amenity fee[6]. By contrast, Holiday Inn Express & Suites I-95 Capitol Beltway - Largo advertises complimentary guest parking[7].

Consumers' Checkbook reported a total price above the room and fee components in the IHG booking screens it examined, but we could not confirm first-screen inclusion across IHG's website and app[8][9]. Outside the US, Hotel Indigo Grand Cayman is one example whose FAQ permits the resort fee and service charges to appear separately from the initial room rate[10]. A September 2026 proposed class action concerning Holiday Inn Resort Orlando Suites - Waterpark alleges resort fees were charged for closed amenities; those are allegations about that hotel, not court findings against the chain[11].

Flexibility depends on the exact rate

IHG describes free cancellation 24 to 48 hours before arrival as typical at most properties on Flexible Rates, but hotel and rate conditions control[2]. Its Flexible Rate typically requires no prepayment, rather than promising that every hotel waives deposits[12].

In the same rates, 60% were refundable[Axel data]. Among refundable rates, 18% allowed free cancellation until less than 24 hours before check-in. Another 49% had deadlines 24 to 72 hours before check-in, while 33% required cancellation at least 72 hours before.

For a lower cash price later, we'd choose a refundable rate and compare again before its free-cancellation deadline[2]. We could not confirm a universal cash repricing tool; IHG explicitly requires cancellation and rebooking for a lower Reward Night price, with a risk of losing award availability[13]. IHG describes typical advance-booking savings of 10% to 20%, but prepaid rates are generally nonrefundable and changes are restricted or fee-bearing[2].

The Best Price Guarantee matches an eligible competing rate and adds 5× room-rate points, capped at 40,000 points, rather than an additional cash discount[14]. Book direct first, then file within 24 hours of booking and leave more than 24 hours before check-in[14][15]. Comparisons must match the room, dates, occupancy, cancellation policy and currency, while undercutting IHG's current lowest rate by at least 1%; ordinary third-party member rates are excluded[15]. That short claim window makes this poor protection against a price drop weeks after booking[15].

A small discount, meaningful channel restrictions

IHG One Rewards is free to join, and IHG describes its signed-in member discount as typically 3% to 5% below comparable non-member rates[4][12]. That is a modest membership hurdle, although the percentage is not a guaranteed saving on every booking[12].

Ordinary non-qualifying third-party bookings do not earn room-rate points or elite-night credit and generally lose member benefits[3]. Members can still earn points on eligible incidental spending, such as room-billed food or laundry, depending on the brand and location[3]. Do not count on Diamond breakfast or elite upgrades to offset an OTA price unless the booking qualifies for benefits[3][16].

Authorized travel agents with direct distribution agreements are an important exception to that rule[3]. Eligible Chase Travel bookings can retain hotel rewards and elite benefits, including points-funded bookings, but require an eligibility banner and your loyalty number; not every property qualifies[17]. For direct online reservations secured by a credit card, IHG also publishes a relocation guarantee covering comparable accommodation, transportation and the first night's lodging and tax if the reservation is not honored[18].

Useful benefits, unpredictable points prices

IHG Reward Night prices are dynamic and can change daily, with the points requirement fixed once booked[19]. IHG advertises nights starting at 5,000 points, but we could not confirm a published upper limit[19]. NerdWallet's October 2026 update valued IHG points at 0.6 US cent each, an independent estimate rather than a guaranteed redemption rate[20].

Recent changes make us cautious about accumulating more points than we expect to use: in April 2025, Frequent Miler recorded nights above 200,000 points at InterContinental Tokyo Bay and the Willard InterContinental Washington[21]. Annual Lounge Membership validity shifted in 2025 to the milestone-achievement year plus the following year, while late-2025 changes reduced eligible members' free annual points-transfer allowance from 500,000 to 100,000 points[22][23]. Club members' points expire after 12 months without a posted earn or redeem transaction, while elite members' points do not expire while status is maintained[3].

Diamond breakfast is a defined welcome-amenity choice for the member and one registered roommate on qualifying stays at participating brands, with property exclusions[24]. Ordinary Platinum and Diamond upgrades remain subject to availability and hotel discretion, and checkout up to 2 p.m. is not guaranteed for any tier[24]. Milestone Confirmable Suite Upgrades offer firmer planning when an eligible suite is available, but require calling between 14 days and 24 hours before arrival and cover up to five nights[4].

Check holds and departure penalties

IHG's digital-check-in terms require acceptance of hotel-specific pet, parking, early-departure and smoking policies, and authorize an incidental hold beyond room charges and taxes[25]. Members get standard internet, but checkout up to 2 p.m. is only on request and subject to availability[16].

Two examples show the financial exposure: Hotel Indigo Orange Beach requires a refundable $50-per-night incidental hold and says release can take 3 to 7 business days[26]. Holiday Inn Express & Suites Tremblant's published policy retains the full stay amount after an early departure[27]. Before booking, ask for both the authorization amount and the charge for shortening your stay[25][27][26].

Kimpton is our pet-friendly pick because its published brand policy imposes no additional pet charge or pet deposit, with no size, weight, breed or number limits[28]. Do not extend that promise across IHG: Staybridge Suites Denver Downtown, for example, charges $75 per pet for stays of 1 to 6 nights or $150 for 7 or more nights[29]. Separately, the advertised Holiday Inn Club Vacations four-day, three-night marketing package requires a two-hour timeshare presentation and age and income eligibility; those conditions do not describe ordinary room reservations[30].

Kimpton leads, individual hotels still matter

IHG says it does not control franchise hotels' day-to-day operations, policies or procedures[1]. We'd therefore use the brand name as a starting point, not a substitute for checking the actual hotel's recent performance[1][Axel data].

Among 960 IHG hotels Axel has reviewed in October 2026, the average was 8.21 out of 10, with 73% at 8 or above and 4% below 7[Axel data]. Those reviews judge each hotel against its class and price, rather than rewarding luxury facilities for their own sake.

Kimpton is the clearest pick among the larger reviewed brands, averaging 8.51 with none below 7, while InterContinental averaged 8.43 with 2% below 7[Axel data]. Holiday Inn Express averaged 8.18, Crowne Plaza 8.05 and Holiday Inn 8.01. Candlewood Suites needs more scrutiny, averaging 7.78 with 24% below 7, compared with Staybridge Suites at 8.23 and 2% below 7.

Independent results are mixed: IHG fell from 79 to 76 in ACSI's 2026 US lodging study, below the industry average of 77[31]. Kimpton won Upper Upscale in J.D. Power's 2026 North American study, while Candlewood placed second in its extended-stay segment, a stronger result than its reviewed-hotel pattern suggests[32][33][Axel data]. Crowne Plaza and Staybridge Suites were below their respective segment averages[34][35]. Hotel Indigo also differs by measure: it was below its North American segment average, but earned a 79% customer score and Recommended Provider designation in Which?'s UK table, based on a 2025 survey[32][36].

  • Axel's take, 960 IHG hotels reviewed: average 8.2/10; 73% score 8 or higher, 4% score below 7. Each hotel is scored for what it is, against its class and price. Across all hotels Axel has reviewed, the average is 8.1 and 8% score below 7.
  • Rates Axel's suppliers quoted, September 26 to October 25, 2026: 114,906 rates at 510 hotels. 60% were refundable, and 18% of those could be cancelled free until less than 24 hours before check-in. 20% of hotels added a mandatory resort, destination or similar fee to most rates (typically $33 a night where charged).

Which IHG brands to book

  • Kimpton (Our pick): Our clearest pick among the larger reviewed IHG brands: an 8.51 average with none below 7, supported by a 2026 J.D. Power segment win[32][Axel data]. Its published no-fee, no-deposit pet policy is a practical advantage[28].
  • InterContinental (Solid): A strong reviewed-hotel record, averaging 8.43 with 2% below 7[Axel data]. Check the fee line, since the Willard and Buckhead Atlanta are examples charging $35 nightly amenity or destination fees[37][38].
  • Holiday Inn Express (Solid): A reasonable mainstream choice, averaging 8.18 with 5% below 7 among reviewed hotels[Axel data]. It placed third in J.D. Power's 2026 Upper Midscale segment, but its name does not guarantee fee-free stays or parking[39][6].
  • Holiday Inn (Mixed): Choose the property rather than the logo: reviewed hotels averaged 8.01, with 6% below 7[Axel data]. ACSI's 2026 brand score fell to 74, although J.D. Power placed it above its segment average[31][39].
  • Crowne Plaza (Mixed): We'd check recent property reviews carefully, given an 8.05 reviewed-hotel average and a below-segment-average result in J.D. Power's 2026 study[34][Axel data].
  • Hotel Indigo (Solid): Reviewed hotels averaged 8.37 with 3% below 7[Axel data]. The UK Which? result supports the choice, but the weaker North American J.D. Power result argues against assuming every location performs alike[32][36].
  • Staybridge Suites (Solid): Our preferred starting point over Candlewood for extended stays, with an 8.23 reviewed-hotel average and 2% below 7[40][Axel data]. Its below-average J.D. Power segment result still warrants a property-level check[35].
  • Candlewood Suites (Mixed): Not a blind booking: 24% of reviewed hotels fell below 7, despite a 7.78 average[Axel data]. Its second-place J.D. Power segment finish is a meaningful counterpoint, so assess the individual hotel rather than rejecting the entire brand[33].

How to book IHG well

  • Choose Kimpton if you travel with pets and want a published brand policy without additional pet fees or deposits[28].
  • Choose a Flexible Rate if plans may change, but read the exact deadline rather than assuming IHG's typical 24 to 48 hours applies[2].
  • Before you book, add parking to the total and check whether a mandatory amenity fee already includes it[41][6][7].
  • Skip an ordinary OTA rate unless its savings compensate for losing room-rate points, elite-night credit and member benefits[3].
  • Before using Points & Cash, accept that a timely cancellation returns the purchased portion as points, not a cash refund[19].

What would raise the score

  • Show one total including every mandatory property charge from the first rate screen in every country and on award searches.
  • Require Flexible Rates to permit free cancellation until 24 hours before arrival, with longer deadlines reserved for clearly labeled exceptions.
  • Offer one-step downward repricing for flexible cash and award bookings without forcing guests to release their room.
  • Publish award-price caps and give advance notice before reducing loyalty benefits or raising those caps.

Questions about IHG

Does IHG waive resort fees when I book with points?

No blanket waiver applies: Reward Night terms allow resort fees and service charges payable directly to the hotel[3]. InterContinental Royal Ambassador members have a narrower amenity and destination-fee waiver, but it expressly excludes resort fees[42].

Are IHG bookings refundable?

Some are: 60% of the same rates were refundable[Axel data]. IHG describes 24 to 48 hours before arrival as typical for Flexible Rates, but individual hotel and rate terms can require earlier cancellation[2]. Prepaid rates are generally nonrefundable[2].

Can I get a lower IHG price after booking?

For cash bookings, the safest route is a refundable rate that you can cancel before its deadline, since we could not confirm a universal cash repricing tool[2][13]. Reward Nights explicitly require cancellation and rebooking, risking award availability[13]. The Best Price Guarantee is separate and requires a claim within 24 hours of the original direct booking[14][15].

Will I earn IHG points and benefits through Expedia or Chase Travel?

Ordinary OTA bookings, including Expedia, do not earn room-rate points or elite-night credit and generally lose member benefits[3]. IHG recognizes qualifying authorized-agent rates, and Chase separately says eligible bookings can retain hotel rewards and elite benefits when an eligibility banner is shown and your loyalty number is provided[3][17].

Do IHG One Rewards points expire?

Club members' points expire after 12 months without a posted earn or redeem transaction, and using an anniversary free-night certificate does not prevent expiry[3]. Elite members' points do not expire while elite status is maintained[3].

What changed for the US IHG Premier card in October 2026?

New consumer Premier cardholders now receive automatic Gold rather than Platinum status, with a $150 annual fee instead of $99[43]. Existing cardholders retain Platinum through December 31, 2027 and encounter the higher fee in 2027[43]. Pre-refresh cardholders continue receiving 40,000-point anniversary certificates through December 2026, with the increased 50,000-point cap beginning in 2027[44].
