Choice hotels rated: 5.6/10 for how they treat paying guests

Book the individual Choice hotel, not the brand promise
Our take: We'd book Choice selectively, not trust the name alone: 21% of hotels Axel has reviewed scored below 7 for their class and price[Axel data]. Cambria is a stronger upscale candidate, while WoodSpring suits extended stays if you accept paid extras and no loyalty points[1][2][3][4][5]. The main catch is uneven hotel quality, compounded by property-specific cancellation and payment terms[6][7][Axel data].
Best for
- Carefully checked individual hotels
- Cambria upscale stays
- WoodSpring stays with limited service needs
Watch out for
- Uneven room standards
- Property-specific cancellation penalties
- Deposits and extended-stay extras

Mandatory fees appeared on 20% of quoted rates and were typically $21 nightly where charged, but the recorded fee share is a floor; Choice has a past disclosure settlement and no chain-wide ban.
Refundable rates are widely available, but cancellation deadlines vary by hotel and rate, while Advance Purchase locks in the entire stay.
Flexible bookings offer an escape before their deadline, but automatic repricing is unclear and the guarantee has narrow, conflicting terms.
Membership is free, but ordinary OTA bookings lose points, elite-night credit and welcome gifts, while published member discounts disagree.
Easier elite qualification helps, but repeated award-price increases, no published chart, non-elite points expiry and conditional hotel benefits weaken the program.
Hotel-set deposits and departure charges need checking; WoodSpring adds service costs, and unmet check-in requirements can still leave guests liable for penalties.
Too many reviewed hotels fall below expectations, supported by weak chain-wide satisfaction results, despite stronger showings from Cambria and WoodSpring.
Fees are limited, not absent
Choice permits hotel-specific mandatory fees, but its 2023 Pennsylvania settlement requires fee-inclusive prices to be most prominent on its U.S.-directed website and app, including price-sorted results[7][8]. Choice settled allegations about omitted fees while denying unlawful conduct and liability[8]. Federal rules have also required prominent mandatory-fee-inclusive lodging prices since May 12, 2025[9]. We could not confirm consistent first-screen disclosure across the website and app from the available fee-included labels[10].
Rates Axel's suppliers quoted from September 26 through October 25, 2026 covered 18,306 rates at 231 hotels, excluding the Philippines and Indonesia[Axel data]. Mandatory property fees appeared on 20% of those rates, while 9% of hotels had a fee on most rates; where charged, the typical fee was $21 nightly. Missing fee information means the recorded fee share is a floor, not a ceiling.
Parking deserves a separate comparison: two examples are Dolphin Sands Clearwater Beach at $25 plus tax nightly per vehicle and Cambria New Orleans at $52 plus 13% tax for a regular car's nightly valet parking[11][12]. Both hotels also charge a separate nightly resort or destination fee[12][11]. Compare the room total, mandatory fees and parking together before choosing either[12][11].
Flexibility depends on the exact rate
Choice's current guidance gives no universal flexible-rate deadline: the property and selected rate determine it, with disclosure before confirmation[6][7]. Of the same rates, 64% were refundable[Axel data]. Among refundable rates, 30% allowed free cancellation less than 24 hours before check-in, 47% required 24 to 72 hours, and 22% required at least 72 hours.
Choice's FAQ advertises Advance Purchase savings starting at 15%, but those reservations are non-cancellable, non-changeable and non-refundable[6]. The full reservation amount is charged within 24 to 48 hours of booking[6]. For a later price drop, a cancellable booking gives you a route out before its deadline; Choice offers modification channels, but we could not confirm a promised same-stay lower-rate adjustment[6].
The Lowest Price Guarantee requires a claim within 24 hours after booking and at least 48 hours before a stated arrival reference time, but the form says 6 a.m. while the legal terms say 6 p.m.[13][14]. Approved claims receive a rate match plus a US$50 reward card for U.S. residents, C$50 for Canadian residents, or the first night free for other residents[13]. Treat it as a short claim opportunity, not protection against every later price drop[13][14].
The published guarantee list names 11 legacy Choice brands; we could not confirm coverage for omitted brands such as Radisson, Country Inn & Suites and Everhome Suites[15]. The competing booking must match room, dates, occupancy, currency and payment and cancellation conditions, and logged-in competitor prices do not qualify[14][15]. Choice checks the rates when its representative reviews the claim, so the lower price must survive that delay[14].
Direct booking keeps the loyalty earnings
Choice Privileges is free to join online, in the app or at the front desk[5]. Its January 2026 rules specify U.S. member savings of 2% to 7% through eligible direct channels, while current marketing advertises up to 10%[16][17]. Check the actual member price rather than assuming either advertised discount applies[16][17].
Ordinary bookings through Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, Booking.com and Priceline do not earn Choice Privileges stay points or elite-night credit and do not qualify for an elite welcome gift[17]. We could not confirm a blanket third-party exclusion for upgrades, breakfast or late checkout, so those should not be grouped with the explicit earnings exclusions[18][17]. Changes and cancellations must go through the booking provider, and Choice warns that it may be unable to help with refunds[7].
Easier status, less predictable awards
The 2026 refresh lowered Gold, Platinum and Diamond qualification to 5, 15 and 35 nights; the new Titanium tier requires 55 nights or 110,000 qualifying credits[19]. Elite points do not expire while status remains in good standing, but non-elites need qualifying activity within 18 months[5][17]. Free points sharing launched on October 1, 2026[20].
Choice has no published category award chart; reward nights start at 6,000 points, although most locations start at 8,000 or more[21][5]. Frequent Miler's March 2026 analysis estimated a median redemption value of 0.75 cents per point, not a guaranteed cash value[22]. The former 35,000-point ceiling outside Asia-Pacific disappeared in 2024, and selected Japanese hotels saw further increases without advance warning in 2026[23][24].
Upgrades at eligible brands and U.S. elite checkout until 2 p.m. depend on hotel availability[25][17]. Award nights have no blackout dates, but hotels control available inventory and can exclude certain room types[17]. WoodSpring Suites does not participate, and points bookings elsewhere still leave guests liable for hotel-imposed mandatory fees[5][17].
Check deposits and extended-stay extras
Choice's terms permit early-departure fees and deposit restrictions, while general early check-in and late checkout are discretionary and may carry a surcharge[26][6]. A property can refuse accommodation for unmet age, identification or payment requirements while still applying the reservation's cancellation, no-show or early-departure terms[7]. Confirm those requirements before committing to a restrictive rate[7].
Two hotel examples show why deposits need checking: Econo Lodge Charlotte Airport Area publishes a $50 cash deposit, including on points stays, while Radisson Blu Aqua Chicago requires a $150-per-night incidental authorization[27][28]. The Chicago hotel also requires a valid credit card at arrival[28]. These are individual hotel policies, not a standard Choice deposit schedule[27][28].
WoodSpring includes basic Wi-Fi, but many locations charge for faster internet[4]. Extended-stay deep cleaning is scheduled every two weeks, with extra charges for more frequent cleaning or linen exchanges[3]. Kitchen appliances do not universally include dishes, cookware or a coffee pot, and early arrival or late departure may cost $50 or more[4][3].
Hotel quality is the biggest weakness
The October 2026 reviews of 569 hotels Axel has reviewed average 7.58: 40% scored at least 8, while 21% scored below 7[Axel data]. Each hotel is judged against its class and price, so these results do not penalize Choice simply for offering budget rooms. Across all hotels Axel has reviewed, the average is 8.10 and 8% fall below 7.
ACSI's 2026 company score puts Choice at 72 out of 100 against a lodging-industry score of 77, with only Wyndham lower among named hotel companies[29]. Its combined Comfort brand scored 74 against an upper-midscale category score of 75[29].
Cambria is a stronger candidate: it scored 704 against an upscale segment average of 694 in J.D. Power's 2026 North America study[1]. WoodSpring won economy extended-stay satisfaction for a fourth consecutive year, although its paid service extras still matter when comparing prices[2][3][4].
Ascend's reviewed hotels averaged 7.97, with 7% below 7, compared with Comfort Inn's 7.57 average and 18% below 7[Axel data]. Quality Inn was weaker at 7.17, with 34% below 7, and also ranked last in J.D. Power's midscale segment[30]. Clarion ranked last in upper-midscale, while Rodeway Inn ranked second-last in economy[31][32].
- Axel's take, 569 Choice Hotels hotels reviewed: average 7.6/10; 40% score 8 or higher, 21% score below 7. Each hotel is scored for what it is, against its class and price. Across all hotels Axel has reviewed, the average is 8.1 and 8% score below 7.
- Rates Axel's suppliers quoted, September 26 to October 25, 2026: 18,306 rates at 231 hotels. 64% were refundable, and 30% of those could be cancelled free until less than 24 hours before check-in. 9% of hotels added a mandatory resort, destination or similar fee to most rates (typically $21 a night where charged).
| Brand | Hotels reviewed | Average Axel's take | Below 7 |

| Choice Hotels | 268 | 7.6 | 21% |

Which Choice Hotels brands to book
- Comfort Inn (Mixed): Check the individual hotel closely: reviewed properties averaged 7.57, with 18% below 7[Axel data]. Comfort Inn also scored below its segment average in J.D. Power's 2026 study[31].
- Comfort Suites (Mixed): A cautious shortlist option, not a consistency guarantee: J.D. Power scored it 653 against an upper-midscale average of 675[31].
- Quality Inn (Skip if you can): We'd skip it without strong recent hotel-specific reviews: 34% of reviewed properties scored below 7, and the brand ranked last in J.D. Power's midscale segment[30][Axel data].
- Cambria (Our pick): Our first upscale Choice brand to check, with a J.D. Power score of 704 against a segment average of 694[1]. Inspect mandatory fees and parking, which can be separate charges at individual hotels[12].
- Ascend Collection (Solid): A better starting point within Choice: reviewed hotels averaged 7.97, with 7% below 7[Axel data]. These are independently positioned hotels, so compare the particular property's terms rather than expecting a uniform format[33][6].
- Country Inn & Suites (Mixed): Reviewed hotels averaged 7.65, with 12% below 7[Axel data]. Its J.D. Power score of 647 was below the upper-midscale average of 675[31].
- WoodSpring Suites (Solid): A credible economy extended-stay option, with four consecutive J.D. Power segment wins[2]. Budget separately for extra cleaning and kitchenware, and expect no Choice Privileges points[3][4][5].
- Rodeway Inn (Skip if you can): We'd look elsewhere unless the individual hotel's recent reviews are convincing: Rodeway ranked twelfth of 13 economy brands in J.D. Power's 2026 study[32].
How to book Choice Hotels well
- Choose Cambria if you want an upscale Choice option, but compare its complete hotel-specific price before committing[1][7].
- Choose a refundable rate if plans or prices may change, and save the exact cancellation deadline shown before confirmation[6].
- Before you book, add parking to the fee-inclusive room total rather than assuming it is included[11][12].
- Before arrival, confirm the incidental hold, accepted payment method and minimum check-in age directly with the hotel[28][6][7].
- Skip WoodSpring if you need frequent included housekeeping, universally included cookware or Choice Privileges points[3][4][5].
- Book direct if points, elite-night credit and welcome gifts matter; ordinary bookings through Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, Booking.com and Priceline give up those benefits[17].

What would raise the score
- Show one mandatory-fee-inclusive first price in every country and booking channel, with parking clearly priced alongside it.
- Set a chain-wide flexible-rate cancellation deadline no earlier than 24 hours before arrival and offer a documented lower-rate adjustment process.
- Publish award-price limits, give advance notice of increases, and reconcile conflicting member-rate and guarantee terms.
- Enforce room-condition standards across franchisees and provide a chain-backed remedy when a hotel fails to resolve a stay problem.
Questions about Choice Hotels
Does Choice charge resort fees on points bookings?
Yes, where the hotel imposes them: Choice Privileges reward nights do not waive resort or other mandatory hotel fees[17].
Can I cancel a Choice hotel 24 hours before arrival?
Only if your selected rate permits it: Choice's current guidance makes the deadline property- and rate-specific[6]. Advance Purchase reservations are non-cancellable and non-refundable[6].
Do I earn Choice points when booking through Booking.com?
No, an ordinary Booking.com reservation earns neither stay points nor elite-night credit and does not qualify for an elite welcome gift[17]. The same restrictions apply to ordinary bookings through Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity and Priceline[17].
Do Choice Privileges points expire?
Non-elite points expire after 18 months without qualifying activity[5]. Points do not expire while you hold elite status in good standing; losing all elite status starts a new 18-month period[17].
Is Radisson part of Choice Hotels?
Radisson brands belong to Choice in the Americas[34]. Outside the Americas, they belong to the unaffiliated Radisson Hotel Group[34].
Will Choice lower my rate if the price drops?
We could not confirm a promised same-stay repricing process; a cancellable reservation gives you the option to cancel and rebook before its deadline[6]. The separate Lowest Price Guarantee has a 24-hour claim window and detailed competing-rate restrictions, so it is not general price-drop protection[13][14][15].
