Hotels in CardiffA historic mid-range city-centre hotel
7.4/10
A handy Cardiff base, but recent maintenance problems take the shine off.
The Royal is a historic mid-range hotel whose strongest selling point is its location: Cardiff Central, the stadium, shops and restaurants are all an easy walk away. We'd consider it for a short city break rather than a polished hotel experience. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise comfortable beds, helpful staff and a substantial breakfast, and the overall ratings remain solid.
The catch is uneven upkeep. Recent guests on both sites describe tired bathrooms, occasional mould and unreliable cooling; others still report spotless, comfortable rooms. More importantly, September and October 2026 reviews report broken lifts, a serious drawback in this stair-heavy building with reception upstairs. Nightlife noise varies by room, and several Tripadvisor guests describe unresolved billing or refund problems. We'd skip it for step-free access unless lift repairs are confirmed, or if quiet and consistent room condition are priorities.

Best for: short city breaks by train; stadium events and shopping; travelers prioritizing location
Watch out for: recent broken-lift reports and numerous stairs; variable room upkeep and nightlife noise; billing and refund complaints
Location: Very central, with the station, stadium, castle and dining within walking distance.
Rooms: Comfortable beds earn praise, but size, bathroom condition and cooling vary.
Cleanliness: Mostly positive overall, with recent bathroom mould and housekeeping complaints.
Service: Often friendly and helpful; complaint handling and refunds receive less consistent feedback.
Amenities: Breakfast and free Wi-Fi; the hotel advertises a restaurant and bar, but confirm opening arrangements.
Fees and surprises: No on-site parking; confirm breakfast inclusion, payment totals and lift operation before arrival.
