#1 of 7 hotels in Gardens & Tamboerskloof by Axel's take. Gardens & Tamboerskloof is #1 of 8 places to stay in Cape Town. The best hotels in Gardens & Tamboerskloof, ranked · Where to stay in Cape Town

Axel's take: 9.3/10

A standout Cape Town guesthouse for personal service, excellent breakfasts and neighborhood character. An intimate, mid-range boutique guesthouse in two Victorian homes, scored for what it is.

Welgelegen is a 14-room boutique guesthouse in two Victorian houses near Kloof Street, rather than a conventional full-service hotel. It's an excellent pick for travelers who value character and attentive hosting over extensive facilities. Tripadvisor's recent reviews repeatedly praise the staff's local advice, carefully kept rooms and generous breakfasts; Expedia guests also highlight cleanliness and friendly service. The courtyard, communal lounges and honesty bar reinforce the relaxed, personal atmosphere.

The compromises are mostly those of a small heritage property. Some recent Tripadvisor guests mention sound carrying between rooms or early kitchen noise, so light sleepers should request a quieter room. The pool is a plunge pool, not somewhere to swim laps, and there's no elevator. We'd skip it if step-free access or resort-style facilities matter more than warm hospitality and nearby restaurants.

  • Best for: Couples seeking a characterful city base; Travelers who appreciate personal sightseeing advice; Restaurant-focused Cape Town stays

  • Watch out for: Sound carries in parts of the old houses; No elevator; limited wheelchair accessibility; Small plunge pool

  • Location: Residential setting near Kloof Street restaurants; the Waterfront and beaches require a drive.

  • Rooms: Individually styled, air-conditioned rooms; request a quieter position if sensitive to noise.

  • Cleanliness: Consistently strong praise across Tripadvisor and Expedia, including recent stays.

  • Service: Personal attention and help with restaurants, tours and local planning are defining strengths.

  • Amenities: Breakfast, courtyard plunge pool, communal lounges, library and honesty bar.

  • Fees and surprises: Breakfast is included; Expedia lists free parking, while transfers and tours cost extra.
