#2 of 7 hotels in Gardens & Tamboerskloof by Axel's take. Gardens & Tamboerskloof is #1 of 8 places to stay in Cape Town. The best hotels in Gardens & Tamboerskloof, ranked · Where to stay in Cape Town

Axel's take: 9.3/10

Mount Nelson earns its luxury reputation through warm service and exceptional gardens. a historic five-star luxury hotel on a garden estate in central Cape Town, scored for what it is.

Mount Nelson is a historic five-star hotel that makes a convincing case for traditional luxury. Its nine-acre garden estate gives central Cape Town an unusually spacious setting, while recent Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise thoughtful staff, comfortable rooms and meticulous housekeeping. We'd choose it for a leisurely city stay: breakfast, afternoon tea and time beside the pools are part of the appeal, not just extras between sightseeing trips.

The main reservation is whether its heritage style suits you. A few recent guests find room interiors dated, and accommodation in outlying buildings can mean an outdoor walk to breakfast and reception. Ask about your room's location before booking. We'd skip it if sleek contemporary design or a waterfront address matters more than gardens and personal service.

  • Best for: couples who enjoy traditional luxury; families wanting gardens and pools; special-occasion city stays

  • Watch out for: room style varies across historic buildings; outlying rooms can involve outdoor walks; not a waterfront location

  • Location: Central Gardens location near Kloof Street and Company's Garden, within a substantial private estate.

  • Rooms: Comfort and space earn strong praise; some guests find the decor dated, so confirm the room and building.

  • Cleanliness: A clear strength across sources, with exceptionally high Booking.com and Expedia cleanliness ratings.

  • Service: Warm, proactive staff and helpful concierges are the most consistent reasons guests recommend it.

  • Amenities: Two outdoor pools, spa, gym, extensive gardens and multiple dining options, including afternoon tea.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking is complimentary; airport transfers cost extra, and late checkout may carry a charge.
