Axel's take: 8.5/10

Strong dining and spotless surroundings, with some friction behind the five-star styling. A stylish, family-friendly five-star beachfront all-inclusive, scored for what it is.

SLS Playa Mujeres is a stylish five-star all-inclusive that makes most sense for families wanting good restaurants without sacrificing grown-up spaces. We'd shortlist it for its modern rooms, extensive pool options and consistently praised housekeeping. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly highlight friendly staff and food that exceeds usual all-inclusive expectations. The adults-only pool offers a useful counterbalance to the splash zone and children's activities.

The compromise is that luxury isn't entirely effortless. Guests report dinner-reservation headaches, occasional slow service and sound carrying from corridors or neighboring rooms. Book restaurants promptly, and distinguish standard inclusions from paid cabanas, spa visits and premium drinks. Beach conditions also vary: recent guests describe both clear swimming and substantial seaweed. We'd skip it for guaranteed quiet, an adults-only atmosphere or a trip built entirely around the beach.

• Best for: Families wanting good dining and children's activities; Couples comfortable with a family resort; Pool-focused all-inclusive vacations

• Watch out for: Dinner reservations need planning; Corridor noise and uneven service; Variable seaweed and paid extras

• Location: Beachfront in gated Playa Mujeres; better for resort time than exploring Cancún on foot.

• Rooms: Modern and generally comfortable; room layout and sound insulation deserve attention.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across recent reviews, with frequent praise for rooms and grounds.

• Service: Warm, attentive staff dominate the feedback, though dining and problem-solving can be uneven.

• Amenities: Four pools, including adults-only space, a splash zone, kids' and teens' clubs, gyms and a spa.

• Fees and surprises: Spa visits, cabanas and premium spirits cost extra; Elite privileges depend on the room package.
