Axel's take: 7.7/10

Good family fun and warm service, with dated rooms and uneven dining. A mid-range beachfront family all-inclusive, not a five-star luxury resort, scored for what it is.

Royal Solaris Cancun is a mid-range beachfront family all-inclusive, not the five-star luxury experience its listing might suggest. We'd shortlist it for families who want pools, a supervised kids' club, a mini water park and nightly entertainment without paying for high-end polish. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the friendly staff and cleanliness; Booking.com's category ratings reinforce those strengths. The beach and ocean views are another clear draw.

The compromises are dated interiors and inconsistent dining: recent guests range from enthusiastic about meals to disappointed by buffet quality and variety. Restaurant reservations can also be frustrating, and some guests describe persistent sales pitches. All-inclusive does not mean everything is covered: the hotel's own site lists room service as extra. We'd skip it for a quiet couples' escape or a food-focused luxury holiday.

• Best for: Families with younger children; Value-minded all-inclusive travelers; Guests who enjoy organized activities

• Watch out for: Uneven food and restaurant-booking frustrations; Dated interiors; Sales pitches and extra-charge services

• Location: Beachfront in the southern Hotel Zone, convenient for the airport but away from the main nightlife hub.

• Rooms: Ocean or lagoon views; generally comfortable and clean, but interiors show their age.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com, despite occasional exceptions.

• Service: Friendly, attentive staff earn repeated praise; sales approaches can interrupt the relaxed atmosphere.

• Amenities: Interconnected pools, supervised kids' club, mini water park, gym, marina activities and nightly shows.

• Fees and surprises: Room service, spa treatments and premium items cost extra; check whether your booking includes the environmental levy.
