Axel's take: 7.4/10

A practical budget base, with friendly staff but uneven rooms and street noise. a no-frills 3-star in downtown Cancún, scored for what it is.

Hotel Santa Maria is a no-frills 3-star in downtown Cancún, not a beach resort. It's a good budget pick for travelers spending their days out rather than expecting hotel comforts. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff and clean rooms, while the courtyard's large tree gives the simple property some character. Nearby markets and inexpensive food make the location useful for an everyday city stay.

The compromises are traffic noise and inconsistent room condition: recent feedback includes worn furnishings, uncomfortable beds and bathroom odors alongside much happier reports. Ask for a rear-facing room, though quiet isn't guaranteed. The hotel confirms limited parking, and Expedia lists no elevator and a city tax payable at the property. We'd skip it for a beach-focused holiday or if quiet, polished rooms are essential.

• Best for: budget-conscious city explorers; short downtown stays; travelers eating at local markets

• Watch out for: street noise, especially in front rooms; uneven room and bathroom condition; limited parking and no elevator

• Location: Downtown near markets and local food; not in the beachfront hotel zone.

• Rooms: Simple air-conditioned rooms; wear and bed comfort vary, and rear rooms are the better noise-conscious request.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised across booking sites, but bathroom odors and linen-condition complaints warrant checking your room.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff are a recurring strength, with occasional less welcoming reception reports.

• Amenities: 24-hour reception, Wi-Fi, garden and terrace; no elevator, and parking spaces are limited.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a city tax payable at the property; confirm late-arrival arrangements because published check-in information conflicts.
