Axel's take: 7.2/10

A practical budget stopover, with friendly staff but uneven rooms and an unappealing setting. a no-frills 2-star in mainland Cancún, scored for what it is.

Hotel Jardín is a no-frills 2-star in mainland Cancún, better for a short budget stopover than a beach holiday. Booking.com and Expedia guests generally rate it as good, with helpful reception staff a consistent strength. Air-conditioning, private bathrooms and free Wi-Fi cover the essentials, and the ADO terminal is within walking distance. We'd consider it for a night between journeys, provided saving money matters more than polish.

The surrounding streets are the biggest compromise: guests across several sites describe feeling uncomfortable after dark. Room upkeep is uneven, with recurring plumbing and hot-water complaints; recent feedback also includes cleanliness problems alongside praise for clean rooms. There's no elevator, and guests report unexpected local taxes at check-in. We'd skip it for a longer leisure stay, step-free access or reliably quiet nights.

• Best for: budget travelers between journeys; short mainland stopovers

• Watch out for: surrounding streets feel uncomfortable after dark; uneven bathroom upkeep and hot water; no elevator

• Location: Mainland neighborhood within walking distance of ADO; not a beach base, and nighttime surroundings divide guests.

• Rooms: Basic air-conditioned rooms; plumbing, hot water and noise receive recurring criticism.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive aggregate ratings, but recent reports show inconsistent housekeeping and some pest complaints.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff are the clearest recurring positive across booking sites.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, free parking and 24-hour reception are listed; the official site offers transport through a partner.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a municipal tax and early/late departure charges; confirm tax inclusion and arrivals after midnight.
