Axel's take: 9.0/10

Distinctive rooms and standout cleanliness make this a strong downtown pick. a design-led, upscale 4-star hotel in downtown Calgary, scored for what it is.

The Dorian is an upscale 4-star downtown hotel with more personality than the usual business address. Its Oscar Wilde-inspired interiors are distinctive, but the appeal goes beyond decoration: Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise comfortable beds, spotless rooms and thoughtful staff. We'd choose it for a romantic weekend or a business trip where the hotel itself matters. The Wilde on 27 adds a rooftop restaurant and bar to the package.

The trade-offs are mostly practical: valet parking and breakfast cost extra, there's no pool, and several Tripadvisor guests find the rooms dimly lit. Restaurant service also draws occasional criticism, although the overall service picture is strongly positive. We'd skip it if swimming facilities, bright interiors or an extras-included stay are priorities.

• Best for: couples on a city break; design-minded travelers; downtown business stays

• Watch out for: dim lighting in some rooms; paid valet parking and breakfast; no swimming pool

• Location: Central downtown base within walking distance of restaurants, shopping and CTrain stations.

• Rooms: Distinctive decor and comfortable bedding earn consistent praise; some guests find the lighting too subdued.

• Cleanliness: A particular strength, with repeated praise for spotless rooms across Tripadvisor and Expedia.

• Service: Generally warm and attentive, with occasional restaurant-service lapses rather than a broad negative pattern.

• Amenities: Fitness centre, rooftop dining and a ground-floor cafe; no pool or airport shuttle.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking, breakfast and pet stays carry additional charges; check-in starts at 4 p.m.
