Axel's take: 6.7/10

A useful downtown base, but the location outshines the upkeep. an aging, budget-oriented 3-star in central Buenos Aires, scored for what it is.

Gran Hotel Argentino is an aging, budget-oriented 3-star whose strongest asset is its central Buenos Aires location. Near the Obelisco, Avenida de Mayo and subway connections, it makes sightseeing straightforward. We'd consider it for a short, location-first stay: Booking.com and Expedia guests generally rate it positively, and many praise the staff, breakfast and practical value rather than the décor.

The catch is uneven upkeep, not simply old-fashioned styling. Recent Tripadvisor and Trip.com reviews repeatedly describe worn furniture, deteriorating paint, tired linen and unreliable temperature control; housekeeping also gets mixed reports. Several guests mention small or troublesome elevators. Breakfast can cost extra, so check your booking. We'd skip it if you need consistently well-maintained rooms or depend on reliable elevator access.

• Best for: budget-conscious downtown sightseers; short, location-first stays

• Watch out for: worn rooms and inconsistent housekeeping; small elevators with reported breakdowns; breakfast not always included

• Location: The standout: central sightseeing and subway access, close to Avenida de Mayo and the Obelisco.

• Rooms: Singles, suites and family layouts; recent guests repeatedly flag wear and temperature-control problems.

• Cleanliness: Generally respectable aggregate scores, but recent reports of dirty surfaces and linen make consistency a concern.

• Service: Many guests praise reception; others describe indifferent responses and unresolved maintenance requests.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, 24-hour reception, limited room service and breakfast available.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and late checkout may cost extra; confirm inclusions and elevator operation before arrival.
