Axel's take: 7.4/10

A practical downtown base with helpful staff, but rooms need updating. an older, traditional mid-range hotel in central Buenos Aires, scored for what it is.

El Conquistador is an older, traditional mid-range hotel in Retiro, sold as four-star on some sites but better approached as a practical city base than an upscale stay. We'd pick it for the central location and helpful staff: Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently rate those strengths above the facilities. Cleanliness generally earns good marks, and the breakfast buffet is another frequently praised convenience.

The compromise is the hardware. Recent reviews across sites describe tired furnishings, with some guests reporting weak showers or ineffective air-conditioning; Wi-Fi also draws mixed feedback. The hotel advertises a sauna, but an August 2026 guest reported it closed throughout a lengthy stay, so confirm availability. It's a sensible choice for sightseeing-focused travelers who tolerate dated rooms; we'd skip it for polished four-star comfort or dependable wellness facilities.

• Best for: sightseers prioritizing a central location; travelers comfortable with older hotels; short downtown stays

• Watch out for: dated furnishings and uneven maintenance; variable showers and air-conditioning; confirm sauna availability

• Location: Central Retiro location, convenient for Teatro Colón, Florida Street and downtown sightseeing.

• Rooms: Traditional, dated rooms; recent guests report some weak showers and inconsistent cooling.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength: both Booking.com and Expedia score cleanliness at 8.0 out of 10.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff are a recurring positive across Booking.com and Expedia.

• Amenities: Breakfast buffet, restaurant, free Wi-Fi and gym; advertised sauna had a reported extended closure in August 2026.

• Fees and surprises: Parking, airport transfers and laundry cost extra; city tax is listed separately, and standard checkout is 10 a.m.
