Axel's take: 9.0/10

An excellent central base when space and independence matter more than full-service hotel bustle. an upscale 4-star apartment hotel in central Berlin, scored for what it is.

The Mandala Suites is an upscale 4-star apartment hotel with a strong case for staying longer: generous suites, proper kitchens and Stadtmitte U-Bahn close by. We'd choose it for comfortable, independent city stays. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise quiet rooms, comfortable beds, cleanliness and helpful staff; Booking.com's strong ratings reinforce that picture. The top-floor breakfast lounge, gym and sauna add useful hotel comforts without sacrificing the apartment feel.

The trade-off is a less full-service setup. Reception has limited hours, especially at weekends, so arrange late arrivals ahead. Breakfast costs extra unless included, and its deliberately small selection won't suit everyone. Some guests find the lighting dim. We'd skip it if round-the-clock reception and a lively hotel atmosphere matter more than space and privacy.

• Best for: couples wanting room to spread out; longer stays and self-catering; sightseers using public transport

• Watch out for: limited reception hours; coordinate late arrivals; small breakfast selection; some guests find room lighting dim

• Location: Central Friedrichstrasse address near Gendarmenmarkt, with Stadtmitte U-Bahn close by.

• Rooms: Spacious studios and suites with kitchens; guests consistently praise quietness and comfortable beds.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across recent guest feedback and major booking-site category ratings.

• Service: Staff receive frequent praise, but reception is not staffed around the clock.

• Amenities: Top-floor breakfast lounge, fitness area and sauna, plus guest laundry facilities.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and garage parking cost extra unless included; the sister hotel's ONO Spa requires a separate paid visit.
