Axel's take: 8.8/10

A characterful, well-kept Berlin base, provided you choose the right room. An independent 3-star Superior townhouse hotel in Berlin’s western Charlottenburg, scored for what it is.

Hotel Brandies is an independent 3-star Superior in an Art Nouveau townhouse, and a strong pick for travelers who prefer character to chain-hotel uniformity. High ceilings and the original 1910 lift give it personality; Tripadvisor and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms, helpful staff and breakfast. Kaiserdamm U-Bahn is practically outside, making this especially convenient for Messe Berlin and Olympic Stadium trips.

Room choice matters. Courtyard rooms earn praise for quiet, but air-conditioning is limited to Superior rooms and the Junior Suite facing Kaiserdamm. Recent guests mention summer heat and traffic noise, so confirm your priorities before booking. This is western Berlin rather than a walk-everywhere sightseeing base. We'd skip it for wheelchair access: the hotel explicitly says its entrance, narrow lift exit and most showers are unsuitable.

• Best for: Messe Berlin visitors; Olympic Stadium trips; Travelers who like historic hotels

• Watch out for: Air-conditioning only in selected categories; Traffic noise in street-facing rooms; Not wheelchair accessible

• Location: Kaiserdamm U-Bahn is about 50 metres away; Messe Berlin is roughly 900 metres away.

• Rooms: Traditional furnishings and varied sizes; choose courtyard quiet or air-conditioned Superior rooms and Junior Suite.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength, with high cleanliness ratings on Booking.com and Expedia.

• Service: Generally praised as helpful and welcoming, though individual experiences vary.

• Amenities: Breakfast buffet, garden terrace, free Wi-Fi, tea-making facilities and 24-hour reception.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion; pets cost extra, and the hotel offers paid parking a short walk away.
