Axel's take: 8.0/10

A good-value Berlin base with helpful staff, but not guaranteed quiet or instant friendships. a budget hostel with dorms and private rooms in Berlin’s Moabit neighborhood, scored for what it is.

Amstel House is a budget hostel in Moabit, with dorms, private rooms and a handsome historic facade. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want useful basics rather than boutique polish: a guest kitchen, bar, games and free luggage storage. Booking.com, Expedia and Hostelworld guests consistently make helpful staff a standout, with generally positive reports on cleanliness and value. Nearby public transport makes exploring straightforward, although the major sights aren’t on your doorstep.

The compromises are familiar hostel ones: basic rooms, squeaky bunks and sound carrying between rooms. Shared-bathroom cleanliness gets some criticism, without dominating the overall feedback. Despite the bar, recent Hostelworld guests suggest the social atmosphere can be subdued. We’d skip it for guaranteed quiet or an effortlessly sociable backpacker scene; otherwise, it’s a sensible, good-value base.

  • Best for: budget travelers comfortable using transit; friends sharing a private room; independent backpackers who self-cater

  • Watch out for: thin walls and squeaky bunks; shared bathrooms vary in cleanliness; social atmosphere can be subdued

  • Location: Moabit neighborhood base, roughly 8–10 minutes’ walk from Turmstraße U-Bahn; expect transit trips to major sights.

  • Rooms: Simple dorms, female-only options and private rooms; bathroom arrangements vary, and there is no air-conditioning.

  • Cleanliness: Generally positive across sites, with some complaints about shared bathrooms and inconsistent housekeeping.

  • Service: Helpful reception staff are the clearest recurring strength; reception operates around the clock.

  • Amenities: Guest kitchen, bar, games, free Wi-Fi and luggage storage; breakfast and bike rental are available.

  • Fees and surprises: Breakfast, towel rental and limited parking cost extra; bedding is included, and on-site payment is cashless.
