#1 of 4 hotels in Hastings by Axel's take. Hastings is #3 of 6 places to stay in Barbados. The best hotels in Hastings, ranked · Where to stay in Barbados

Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong all-inclusive for good food and friendly service, rather than polished luxury. a relaxed, family-friendly 4-star beachfront all-inclusive, scored for what it is.

Sugar Bay is a relaxed, family-friendly 4-star beachfront all-inclusive, and we'd put it high on the shortlist for an easy Barbados holiday. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the genuinely welcoming staff, clean rooms and varied, well-prepared buffet. Its relatively compact layout feels more personal than a sprawling resort, while the beachfront setting near the Garrison makes exploring beyond the hotel straightforward.

The trade-offs are worth knowing: some guests describe tired bathrooms and uneven air-conditioning, and pool loungers can fill early. The breakwater shelters the swimming area, but seaweed and currents can still affect beach days. Specialty dinners require reservations and have included-visit limits; a mandatory room levy is also payable. Choose it for relaxed comfort and good food; skip it if you want adults-only quiet or consistently high-end rooms.

  • Best for: families wanting an easy all-inclusive; couples who prefer a smaller resort; travelers who prioritize food and friendly service

  • Watch out for: seaweed and variable swimming conditions; early competition for pool loungers; specialty-dining limits and a separate room levy

  • Location: Beachfront near the historic Garrison, with access to Bridgetown and nearby beaches.

  • Rooms: Generally comfortable and spacious; some guests report dated bathrooms and uneven air-conditioning.

  • Cleanliness: Strong overall guest feedback, although some reviews flag worn grout and areas needing deeper cleaning.

  • Service: Warm, helpful staff are the clearest recurring strength across recent guest reviews.

  • Amenities: Two pools, a swim-up bar, four restaurants, children's clubs and a spa; not adults-only.

  • Fees and surprises: Mandatory room levy; specialty dinners have booking and frequency limits, while premium drinks and room service cost extra.
