Axel's take: 8.6/10
A strong fjordside pick for character and views, provided you choose your room carefully. A family-run 3-star historic guesthouse with fjordfront cabins, scored for what it is.
Vangsgaarden is a family-run, historic 3-star guesthouse with hotel rooms and fisherman-style cabins beside Aurlandsfjord. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want village character rather than a conventional hotel. Booking.com and kimkim guests repeatedly praise the waterfront setting, welcoming staff, cleanliness and breakfast; the cabins’ decks are a particular draw. We’d choose it for a quieter base outside Flåm.
Choose the accommodation carefully: some doubles are compact, cabin loft beds have limited headroom, and not every room overlooks the fjord. There’s no elevator, so travelers with mobility limitations should confirm access before booking. Breakfast inclusion varies, and Expedia flags a cleaning charge for waterfront-cabin guests who don’t clean themselves. The gastropub is seasonal; check opening dates for an off-season stay. Skip it if spacious, standardized rooms matter more than character.
