Axel's take: 7.1/10
A workable Flåm base for independent travelers, but comfort and hospitality vary. A rustic farmhouse hostel with shared bathrooms outside central Flåm, scored for what it is.
Brekke Gard is a rustic farmhouse hostel, not a full-service hotel: expect simple private rooms or dorm beds, shared bathrooms and communal cooking. We'd consider it for a short, self-catered stay rather than a comfortable retreat. The mountain-and-farmland setting is its strongest asset, with the Brekkefossen trail nearby and central Flåm roughly 15–20 minutes away on foot. Guests often praise comfortable beds and clean rooms, though value judgments are divided.
The recurring drawbacks are steep, narrow stairs, sound carrying through old wooden buildings, and bathrooms that can become busy or unevenly maintained. Recent Tripadvisor, Agoda and Priceline guests also describe inconsistent communication and limited staff availability. We'd skip it for mobility needs, light sleepers or anyone expecting attentive hotel service; independent travelers packing light are a better fit.
