Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong self-catering base in Flåm, provided you choose your room carefully. A simple hostel and rustic cabins on a family-run campsite, scored for what it is.

Flåm Hostel & Cabins is a simple hostel and cabin complex on a family-run campsite, not a conventional hotel. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want to explore Flåm without paying for hotel-style extras. The railway, ferry terminal and grocery shop are a short walk away. Booking.com and Tripadvisor guests consistently praise the clean rooms and shared facilities, while helpful staff and practical cooking spaces make self-catering easy.

The main catch is that accommodation types differ substantially. Some have private bathrooms; others involve downstairs showers or a walk to a separate service building. Expect compact rooms and, in several categories, narrow bunk beds. Linen is included, but you make your own bed; bring towels or rent them. We’d skip it if you want full-service comfort, but for an independent fjord stopover it delivers very well.

  • Best for: Budget-conscious fjord explorers; Self-catering families and friends; Travelers arriving by train or ferry

  • Watch out for: Bathroom arrangements vary substantially; Narrow bunks in several room categories; Towels cost extra

  • Location: A short walk from central Flåm, the railway, ferry terminal and grocery shop.

  • Rooms: Basic hostel rooms and cabins; check bed widths, bathroom location and stairs before booking.

  • Cleanliness: Clean rooms, kitchens and shared bathrooms are a consistent strength across guest reviews.

  • Service: Guests frequently praise helpful reception staff and clear pre-arrival communication.

  • Amenities: Shared kitchens, cabin kitchenettes, outdoor seating, luggage storage and free parking support independent stays.

  • Fees and surprises: Linen is included but beds are self-made; bring towels or pay to rent them.
