Axel's take: 9.1/10

A strong Piraeus pick for thoughtful service and rooftop views, not sprawling rooms. a modern 4-star boutique hotel on Piraeus’s Kastella hill, scored for what it is.

The Alex is a modern, 34-room, 4-star boutique hotel in Santikos Collection, overlooking the coast from Kastella rather than sitting in central Athens. It’s a strong pick before a ferry or cruise, with more character than a purely practical port stop. Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests consistently praise cleanliness, helpful staff and the rooftop restaurant’s views and breakfast. We’d favor a sea-view balcony room to make the most of the setting.

The main compromise is space: entry-level rooms start at 16 square meters, and recent guests repeatedly describe compact bedrooms. Some also mention road noise, while the small, slow lift deserves consideration if access matters. This is not a pool-and-gym hotel or a walk-to-the-Acropolis base. Choose it for attentive boutique hospitality and Piraeus’s waterfront restaurants; skip it if generous rooms or central Athens sightseeing take priority.

• Best for: couples wanting sea-view balconies; pre-cruise and ferry stays; travelers exploring Piraeus’s waterfront

• Watch out for: compact entry-level rooms; road noise in some rooms; small, slow lift

• Location: Hilltop Kastella setting near Mikrolimano’s restaurants; plan transport to port terminals and central Athens.

• Rooms: Modern rooms span 16–36 square meters; sea views and balconies depend on category.

• Cleanliness: A standout across sources, with strong cleanliness ratings and repeated housekeeping praise.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are a consistent strength, including assistance arranging transfers.

• Amenities: NEST rooftop restaurant and bar, lobby coffee and Wi-Fi; no pool or fitness center.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists paid parking, pet charges and a seasonal accommodation tax; breakfast inclusion varies.
