Axel's take: 8.7/10

A personable Kolonaki base where thoughtful service matters more than extensive facilities. a small, design-led 4-star boutique hotel in Kolonaki, scored for what it is.

Periscope is a 22-room, design-led 4-star in Kolonaki, and a strong pick for travelers who prefer neighborhood cafés and personal service to a big hotel's facilities. It's part of Design Hotels, not a conventional Marriott. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, excellent housekeeping and comfortable beds. Complimentary lounge snacks, coffee and soft drinks add genuine value, while nearby museums, shops and restaurants make this a rewarding city-break base.

Choose your room carefully: standard rooms are compact, and some lower-floor rooms face inward with limited daylight. A street-facing Superior is worth considering. The surrounding hills and stairs are another practical drawback; Marriott also flags a non-wheelchair-accessible main entrance. We'd skip it if step-free access or extensive leisure facilities are priorities. The rooftop hot tub belongs to the penthouse, not everyone.

• Best for: couples on city breaks; museum and café explorers; travelers who value personal service

• Watch out for: compact, sometimes dark standard rooms; hilly streets and entrance accessibility; penthouse-only rooftop hot tub

• Location: Upmarket Kolonaki, roughly ten minutes on foot from Syntagma and five from Evangelismos metro.

• Rooms: Minimalist rooms; standards are 22 square meters, while Superiors face Haritos Street.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Tripadvisor and Expedia feedback.

• Service: Warm, proactive staff repeatedly earn praise for recommendations and transport arrangements.

• Amenities: Complimentary lounge refreshments and Wi-Fi; the outdoor hot tub is exclusive to the penthouse.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; seasonal accommodation tax is collected locally, and there is no on-site parking.
